GTG old ANACS graded Grant w/STAR (Grade is in!) at the bottom of OP

BodinBodin Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭
I'm hoping that I don't drown in my purchase. I liked the poor image. Really like the coin in hand. The die polish lines are CRAZY. Would love to hear your thoughts/guesses as to grade. (I know photo-grading isn't that accurate....just play along)
ANACS in 86 saw this as an MS60. We'll find out soon what our hosts think.
The NGC prongs are for photographic purposes only.

I feel that even if your shoes and socks were filled with these you still couldn't drowned as a Grant with Star is always in demand. As for as a grade I see no rub and due to the heavy die polish lines these rarely come with eye appealing color progression. I have no idea how PCGS will grade this but I wouldn't be apposed seeing this in a MS62 holder.

I like the color, but the luster looks flat, if not entirely washed out. It appears to have been dipped and was given time to retone.

IMHO, I think ANACS was on the right track with that grade...

Luster wise this issue is flat and once dipped they look like a chrome trailer hitch. I wouldn't be surprised if it grades in higher then what I felt comfortable with based on the op's pics. I've personally never owned one as in the 28 years since I started playing with commems I've seen less Grant's w/stars that I really liked enough to purchase then I could count on one hand after a major chain saw mishap.

There is no question, the luster is slow to the podium on this coin. That being said, it is very much mark-free and that is where I don't know what to grade it at. I'll put in my guess, since I had it in hand(off to PCGS), tomorrow.

If so, you're probably right, it had to be dipped more than 30 years ago as the spots from the ANACS picture still show.....is this all the toning we could get in 30 years?

label on the slab is very deceiving, why would they put genuine on it, maybe if sent to pcgs would come back as alter surface
  • Looks like a pretty wholesome coin from the photos. I'll guess PCGS goes MS63.

It's a coin that has to be seen in hand.

The luster on the Grant Star coins is almost always flat. You can sometimes find the no-star Grant with beautiful, delicate frosty luster, but usually not the With Star.

This coin looks decent for the type. I like it.

MS 63. (62 on a bad day, but the price doesn't start jumping until 64).

It is easy to follow Kove with my guess, now that Kove explained a bit. PCGS 62 is my guess.

I'm going to go against the grain on this one and guess Genuine, 92.

When ANACS graded this coin who was there at that time....who might have graded this coin?

why does the label say half dollar, that the silver one, gold coin is 1 dollar, something not right here

I'll go 63...I don't think it necessarily is a 63, but I think w/ star is worth one extra point.

I hope not, Paul... I have no experience in determining cleaned coins, especially one that might have been cleaned 30+ years ago.

Isn't there a rule that I have to get 3 "you sucks" before I can accept the official "you suck" award?
If so.... bring 'em on. I've always wanted to earn a "you suck"

    Bravo. Only a 64 because of the rub. . . image . . image

If you've never played with a Grant, with Star or not, take note

These issues rarely show hairlines unless actively abused, but, to the uninitiated the omnipresent and ubiquitous die-polish lines can be mistaken for them. If you don't on the first try, the second time you look you will totally "get it"

With "with Stars" at $700 for a circ, they are faked. There is an authenticity marker inside the star. Wish I remembered it. Might be lumps at the bottom of the "well" but, IIRC, I don't recall the details at all. . . image

edited to add: You suck. . .image

Nice coin! It's a good thing you have the "color photo" otherwise those black and white ones don't bring as much money! Especially when the coin is a MS64 like that one is and the luster is all there. Disagree??? Buy a book.

the only problem I have with the Grant gold is that it needs to be a couple of sizes larger to really show it's beauty.

I was thinking it might go AU58 so I would be happy with the grade.

"Genuine" as in "authentic". This was light years before PCGS came up with a Genuine Slab label.

Because the photography produce a gold color to the photograph.
