4min 59sec *OFFICIAL* Keyman64's FUN, FUN SHOW REPORT & GTG!!!...***GRADE REVEALED***

I arrived at 8:15 AM on Thursday fueled by a very large Diet Coke and McDonald's Big Breakfast with Pancakes! The convention center was also set up for a "SURF EXPO". There was some nice eye candy walking the halls and I swore if I got done early enough I would wander down the hall to view some nicer folks. I went to lot viewing, my first time doing this at a big show and I decided to take full advantage of the opportunity to not only view things that I might bid on but to also learn a little bit by viewing some big boy toys that I would not be bidding on. I spent about 45 minutes viewing the "cheap stuff". When I was sitting there being a good lot viewer, DIMEMAN walks up trying to start a fist fight over some dimes that I clearly started viewing first. Security had to come over to calm the young whippersnapper down. DIMEMAN finally calmed down and accepted the fact that the coins were MINE! He then joined me in a chair close by. He started to reminisce about the good ol' days and I quickly brought that to an end by showing him the dimes he wanted to see. I then spent about 30 minutes educating myself with PLATINUM NIGHT material. I viewed the AU55 Chain Cent (amazing experience, wow I want one), a 1794 $1 (amazing experience), a 1796 Quarter in MS60 (the obverse was rough in that grade), a Continental Dollar...wow I want one, the 1792 Half Dime in PCGS SP67 with what surprised me to be a vertical scratch on the obverse left field...besides that it is an AMAZING thing to hold in your hand. I viewed a couple of other big toys but those were the highlights.
Once finished, I walked out of lot viewing to get my name tag and join DIMEMAN to show him some of the toys I brought with me since we had 15 minutes to burn before the show opened. He mentioned that RYK was in lot viewing with us. We wandered back into lot viewing briefly but sadly he was gone. Maybe next time. We then lined up with at least 100 other fanatics to sprint onto the bourse floor like a bunch of crazed Wal-Mart shoppers on Black Friday.
I ran off to start my Cherrypicking activities on aisle 1200 since there was a dealer there that I am frequently able to Cherrypick.
He had two coins that I could have Cherrypicked but they were raw and priced according to their over grading. They just were not worth it and I have finer examples anyway...how many of these things do I need when I have the top pops already? I of course was focusing on the ones I do not have or the ones I need to upgrade but I tend to look for all of them. So, I passed on a 1931-S Merc DDO in MS63, a couple of low grade 1944-D/D Mercs but ended up buying one at a good price later...still don't know why. It's a drug I think and DIMEMAN gave me a hard time for Cherrypicking it. He's probably right but oh well. I frequently went by Table 1053 - Holsonbake Numismatics, to rest and visit with Glen and MFH (a young man with passion for Barber material). Really good people they are! I then went to "check in" with the OFFICIAL SHOW REPORTER, Charmy Harker. She quickly took up the roll of a paparazzo, snapped my photo and then shared her newest pride and joy for her personal collection. Nice one, Charmy! Browsing more tables, I saw a couple of 1945-Micro S Mercs that were unattributed throughout the day. Each time, the dealers seemed very nice to me letting me look through tons of material so I told them what the coins were so they could reprice their inventory. Had the coins been in holders and higher grade I'm pretty sure I would have snatched them up but it wasn't the case. A little later, I went back to that first dealer that I enjoy Cherrypicking so much. I knew he was deep into the coin as he bought it as a MS64 but the truth was it was a MS63 and he agreed with me. So I went back and told him what he had so that he actually might be able to sell it without losing his butt...with the DDO attribution and as a MS63, he can sell the coin at the price point he needed to get out from under the thing.
I had a convention burger for lunch with DIMEMAN. I was having a great time but was not finding much and felt a bit disappointed in that regard with the first couple hours of the show gone. After lunch I was on a MISSION! Find something! I ended up having more fun conversations with different dealers and still wasn't finding much. There were a number of dealers with crazy color coins and crazy plastic with crazy stickers all over the place. I was havin' none of that craziness because I know how much people charge for that tarnish...frequently many multiples of what the coins are worth. I don't mind the stuff when it is nice but what I do mind is paying through the nose for it. Well, I came by a table with lots of crazy color. I was looking in this case dominated by crazy color for fun...really looking for Mercury Dimes and somehow someway I saw a coin that JUMPED OUT AT ME. It stood out among the rest of the crazy color. I had to look at it, look up the retail price in that grade in the PCGS price guide and finally ask the dealer his price. I was SHOCKED by the price of such a beautiful coin. Not shocked that it was expensive but shocked that it was so affordable as it was only priced $20 more than full retail...$80-100 over bid or something like that. It was an 1893 Barber Dime! That's a PROBLEM! I did not have the type of cash required for the coin and really wasn't planning on selling anything although I did bring some stuff to sell but forgot it in the car. I don't buy toned coins and I rarely buy much that isn't a Mercury Dime! I was in trouble and needed help quick. I did not ask the dealer to hold it for me because it would probably be best if it was gone by the time I got back with money and with my trusted Barber Adviser! I ran to my car, got some coins to sell, went to visit Glen at Table 1053 - Holsonbake Numismatics....I sold my previously Cherrypicked 1945-Micro S toned NGC MS66 in an unattributed holder. I had bought it for $30 and I was able to sell it to Glen for a very fair price. I also sold him another coin of mine that I no longer needed. Very fair and great to deal with! Next, I had to grab my trusted Barber Adviser, MFH, and convince him to go to another table with me and tell me NOT TO BUY THE SILLY DIME. Mike quickly told me that I SHOULD NOT BUY IT....but HE SHOULD BUY IT!
To say the least I quickly retrieved some cash from my pocket and paid the man what he was asking. Joe Kaminski of Kaminski Coin (Table 830 I think) was a pleasure to deal with and he has great material. MFH then went running off with my new coin while I got a receipt....where the heck....what the heck....where did my coin just go? I had it for 2 seconds. SECURRRRRRRITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I caught up to MFH and my coin. It seems it went to a few folks for viewing. It got the stamp of approval from some important people. MFH was already trying to talk me out of it with fancy offers of $5, then $10 ....and $20 cold hard cash immediate profit.
I resisted his tempting offers. Thanks to Mike for being my trusted adviser on that purchase as it was not my specialty. I then showed it to Glen so he would know what some of his money was spent on and then also STONE as he was hangin' out at the cool table as well. After the excitement wore off a little, I went back to actually look at what was in Joe Kaminski's table. He wanted me to look at a very nicely toned MS67 1938-D Buffalo Nickel. I know enough about Buffalo Nickels to Cherrypick them. I think this was the case of karma coming back to Joe as I was able to thank him for a great transaction and tell him that he actually had a 1938-D/D in MS67 nicely toned!
Here is the subject of the Guess the Grade and what helped make my show a success. It is Mint State and in a Mint State Holder. The streaks in front of Liberty's face are not scratches but toning lines. There does seem to be some breaks in luster on the obverse but no major marks. The rims are electric blue/purple all the way around the coin. I then went over to see Todd of BlueCC Fame so that he could photograph my new toy. THANK YOU TODD!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK!!! I also showed it to Charmy. She was not impressed and complained that it wasn't copper. Figures!

Clearly, from a poor man's perspective the rest of the show would be down hill from here but when there are such great people around you it is hard to go too far down the hill. I then went looking to Cherrypick more stuff for the rest of the afternoon. I found a double clipped 1945-D Mercury Dime raw in MS65FB, priced below MS65FB....so I bought it! Yippeeee I didn't have one of those so I thought it was a cool purchase! I even stopped by to bend the ear of Fred Weinberg and he told me I didn't lose my butt on the coin thankfully.
It was then quickly 6:30PM, ALREADY!!! I never got to go see the eye candy at the SURF EXPO! Nooooooo, say it isn't so. Oh well. There were 14 of us that went to dinner, mostly a bunch of old farts except for STONE and myself of course....oh, and a very cute 22 year old woman (one of the old folks' daughter
) Some of the forum members were OnlyRoosies, RainbowRoosies, KryptoniteComics/Shane, RealOne, Wondercoin, DIMEMAN, lablover, ...ugh and others. The 7:30 dinner reservation at Vito's was yummy but we ended up being there for 3 hours or so...I drove a couple people back to hotels and then I drove my happy self home and was home before 1AM and ready to go to work early this morning.
It was a fantastic day of coins, very nice dealers, the opportunity to buy and sell, the opportunity to lot view, the opportunity to put faces with funny forum handles...only one opportunity was missed...the DARN EYE CANDY IN THE SURF EXPO! Thank you Everyone!

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
<< <i>This report was not long enough.

Next time I will talk more about the wine that Charmy was pouring in the afternoon or the 24oz Bone-in Rib Eye I had for dinner.

Edited to correct: Oops, I didn't read the post, and I relied solely on the images. I still stick with my MS61 guess.

<< <i>Interesting dime! In fact, my photo disc has 9 views of that coin on it (but none of my coins, unfortunately).... >>
oh noooooo! Do you need the coin to go with the photos? LOL!!!!!! Sorry to hear about the mix up.

I conservatively guessed MS63 since, for reference, I also own a heavily toned dime of the same date graded 62 CAC, but with some facial scratches.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
It's just funny in that I hadn't even bothered to check my disc until I read your post, and up pops your dime!
<< <i>My guess is Todd got us "Gregs" files mixed up - he was very busy throughout the show, so it's understandable, and I know he'll make it right.

I'm sure he will fix it pretty quick.

That dime of his looks much better in person than in the pics. Looked like a MS-63/64 in person.
But then we were looking in very dim lighting!
I was soooooo tired and only drank 14 iced teas since I was so dehydrated from the air conditioning on the flight in the morning and the show.
I passed around a cleaned morgan silver dollar and everyone missed it!
Rule #1 never grade coins in dimly lit restaurant
Rule#2 always say that the coin looks cleaned when in a dimly lit restaurant but you might get punched out.
Rule #3 always remember to get YOUR coins back during show and tell especially in a dimly lit restaurant.
I bought his 1875 25c PCGS MS-64+
It is a wowzie looking coin.
Also a 1894-S $20 raw which appears to be a MS-61, I will submit it to PCGS.
Also a 1937 5c PCGS MS-66 with gorgeous blue toning.
Am I missing something, or does it appear only to me that like Miss Liberty has Abe Lincoln's beard? A more crisp image of the coin's bright white centers would answer this question.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
<< <i>The problem I have with this coin image is that it is crisp re capturing the coin's rim toning, but a bit overexposed re its white centers. Not to rag on the guy who imaged it, rather, getting any image of a light subject on a dark background, or vice versa, is difficult under the best of circumstances.

Besides the electric blue/purple rims all the way around the coin, the images are very accurate. The photos from Todd had to be edited just a little but to get it to be an accurate representation of the coin. The raw photos had light yellow centers which is not the case at all. The centers are bright white, no questions asked. On the obverse, in regards to the beard etc....those are breaks in luster on the face and neck where they are a bit on the gray side.
