Credit Union haul today- how'd I do? (No silver, but...)

lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,671 ✭✭✭✭✭
So I was at my Credit Onion today. I'd been thinking of doing a scavenger hunt for my daughter's birthday, involving some dollar coins and halves, if I could find them. I asked the teller if they had any. She said no halves. They seldom have those, but I did hit a nice lick and score three or four rolls of solid 40% Kennedies several years back, when bullion was much lower.

The teller said she did have dollar coins, but they were Sacagaweas. For some reason, though she said they were Sackies, my brain thought they were Suzies. I said, "yeah, let me see those- they're obsolete, now".

So she brought 'em out. Four trays containing eighteen rolls of "golden" dollars.

Then she said, "yeah, a member was going to buy a new house and needed money, so he cashed in all kinds of sets of coins".

At the word "sets", my antennae went up a bit.

Sure enough, it would appear that this sack o' Sacs is in fact a roll set. I picked up a few rolls and saw some of those later dates like 2007 and 2008 that one never sees in circulation around here. Kind of cool.

But this put me in a bit of a pickle because buying the whole set (plus some additional rolls of Prez bucks and Native Americans) required me to dip into my savings deeper than expected.

Still, at face value, I figured, I could always just redeposit 'em if I had to.

I'm almost certain this is indeed a roll set like the teller said it was. Some of the rolls have both end pieces with reverse-out, but there are nine rolls each from Philadelphia and Denver, and no duplication in the visible dates. They're still in US Mint wrappers.

P-MINTS
    (1 roll ea.) 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008(2 rolls) with "P" wrappers but end coins showing only reverses
D-MINTS
(1 roll ea.) 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007(4 rolls) with "D" wrappers but end coins showing only reverses

Apparently there were Statehood quarter and nickel sets also turned in that I missed out on.

These could probably fetch a premium somewhere if you look (especially the post-2001 dates). I'd say start with the BST.

you may be able to eBay them, check the closing prices. I'd check singles and rolls prices.

If they are not profitable to be sold on eBay, then what I'd do is shuck them and look for keepers.
Run the discards through a change machine.

You could also keep a few of each year around for the place in case anyone comes looking for some singles for albums.

I recently sold 2 bags ($4000) of 2004-D, at face value after sitting on them and losing money for a couple of years. However, I would much rather have paid face like you did. --Jerry

I just crunched the numbers with an eBay fee calculator.

If I start these out at face value ($450.00), and they sell but do not advance past the opening bid, based on an auction with $9.00 shipping (presumably enough to cover a small Flat Rate Priority box and insurance), there will be $41-something in fees. Ow.

Ebay would put them out there in front of more eyeballs and potentially more offers, but I have to weigh that against the fees.

    Not sure what I'll do.

I can't afford to keep 'em all- $450 is a lot of money in this household.

I searched past and present auctions and didn't see any full roll sets like this offered. Just a roll here, a matched pair of P & D rolls there, etc. No 18-roll sets, as far as I can tell.

A lot of folks might be in the same predicament as me, with not having enough available funds to just lay aside that much in one go.

I will be piggybacking 18 coins or so in another member's TPG submission soon, and therefore will be owing him a fair amount of dough. Maybe I'll offer him these coins at face plus shipping and no premium, just to be nice and pay down my debt to him.

That's if he wants 'em, of course.

Hi, Stef. Some of my endroll coins are toned a little bit, but not in a particularly special way, I don't think. A few of the endroll pieces look sort of hazy. This "golden" dollar alloy doesn't usually do so good, does it? I also bought two aftermarket rolls of mixed Prez bux and Native American dollars (which I then mostly spent around town, as many of them were already circulated and some rather funky looking).

But generally speaking, I'll bet the coins inside these rolls are nice and mint fresh, even if the endrollers ain't as purdy as what you just posted.

PS- oh, hey! I know! image

I'll just pop 'em in the oven a little while. With those paper wrappers, I oughtta get some sweeet colors out of 'em!

I brought home a 2000P roll from a local bank not too long ago that had some ringed rim toning and some coins were slightly more golden due to the papers. the rim toning wasn't only on the end roll coins.

the ones in circulation tone an ugly shade of brown.

I do have one that has a pretty uniform and pretty ugly tone of green/aqua over the manganese brown. It's kind of sickly looking. I also notice that if toned in contact with the dust from the shredded paper rolls they turn a very light blue color.

unfortunately, no enhanced tail feathers for me.

Those are US MINT Wrapped rolls, they will fetch a premium on eBay unlike the Bank wrapped rolls, which will not.

image Wil the premium cover the fees? Don't know. You can do a BIN for $550 and see if you get any bites, at least for a couple of days????

Not a bad idea, I suppose. I guess I could always yank the auction if nobody bids and somebody in another venue wants 'em.

I voted assemble some sets and redeposit the rest, only because I've heard some sellers do well in the sets market (especially US types). I've never been a set seller, so I can't speak from personal experience :-/

Larry, aka "Dabigkahuna", is graciously allowing me to "piggyback" 18 of my coins on his NGC Ancients submission. Since that service is a wee bit pricey, I am sending him these Sacs along with my ancient submission coins, to be counted at face towards what I'll be owing him. Figured since he's doing me the favor of letting me piggyback a rather large number of coins, I might as well return the favor by passing these along to him at face value like I got 'em.
