Contest, best coin pic.

Post your coin pics. The winner will receive a Giclee of his pic. I'm going to let the board decide the winner by a poll. Starts now and will ends last day, midnight this month. Just remeber the winner will have to E-mail his pic. so I can produce it. Please allow 2 weeks for delivery.
I will now have to figure out how to set a poll up??? Don't let that stop you from starting to post your pics. This is a democracy lol, so I will abide by the forums vote no matter what.
I do believe you will like your prize. jws

Should the winner desire I will also display a Giclee of the coin pic. in the Gallery. The winner will have to set the price, and yes the split is 50/50 should it sell. Due to limited space I will only be able to display the Giclee in the Gallery for 30 days. Should winner desire to do this it will require a written release. I can E-mail you a copy should the winner want to do this. Have fun and good luck. jws

This is a giclee of a coin I sold to Julio. He sent this to me as a gift. I sure was surprised. Sorry about my sorry picture image

    image

I asked this question of Julio in an email a few day's ago and this is a synopsis of his reply:
The process is just like printing a picture at home on your pc and printer. Only difference is the printer. I use an Epson 9600. The canvas comes in rolls 40 inches wide and 40 foot long. The hardest part is stretching the suckers. A straight photo to canvas is about a twenty minute task although the really large ones take a lot longer to print and stretch. The real challenge is a really old photo that needs major work to get it restored.

The link posted by Centus gives a great description of a Giclee. The only difference being I use seven colors instead of four. Although they are technically correct when they say, "4 colors" . I use Light magneta, Magneta, Cyan, black, yellow, light black, and light cyan. Plus I have a few tricks that I will keep to myself. Just remember a Giclee is not an original work of art and should be viewed as such, it is a reproduction. Now if you want to discuss original art I'd love to. jws

I'ts a great idea but the cost would be prohibitive. Marketing alone would cost me a bundle unless I could get Oprah to recomend it or other sources of free publicity. Production cost would not be that cheap but could be overcome. My son and step mother are both published authors. I've got a ton of rejections and had to quit trying and make a living. My stepmother published URSA MAJOR-A Tale of the Old South and numerous booklets about Gullah. Unfortunately most good books never get published and the trash makes millions, go figure. It's definitely a roll of the dice and a high stakes gamble to do it right.

Now a question for you and the other forum members. I've got a request to set up a poll in the QA forum. Who tallies those and are they reliable. I want the forum members to pick the winner and I want everyone assured it was legitimate. Any and all suggestions are welcome, I just want to make sure that the member with the most votes wins.

I want to thank all the artist who have entered and I can hardly get any sleep because I keep waking up just to admire the pics. again and again and again. They are without doubt awe inspiring. I've taken thousands of pics. and like the fool I am thought taking a pic. of a coin would be a cake walk, I was dead wrong. These people have a real talent and should be commended. Anyone who enjoys coins will also admire the endeavors put forth.

I must admit I did have an ulterior motive for starting this thread. I desired a quick refrence of some really great coins to use in my search to be a more knowledgable collector. I sincerely hope this will be a thread that all will use to gain a little knowledge. It's off to a great start. My sincere thanks and gratitude to those who are willing to put their art out here for all to enjoy. jws

The colorful 1880-S PCGS MS68 Morgan I posted earlier was photographed by me. However, I would like to post another image and nominate Phil Arnold, the photographer for PCGS, for the following PCGS True View™ of my 1900-O Barber quarter (even though the graders insisted on downgrading it from NGC MS67* to PCGS MS66). This image is 1100 x 555 pixels x 96 dpi resolution x 24 bit color. Unfortunately there isn't room to display the larger image that PCGS also provided, 4400 x 2200 pixels, which has incredibly sharp detail of every minutia of the design. That image is 7.26 MB, while the image below is only 526 KB. The large 6-7 MB images by PCGS are truly amazing.

Sunnywood, should the pic by Mr. Arnold win I would require a signed release from him in order to reproduce his pic. This usually does not present a problem, we have gotten permission from the White House to make/reprint and even make changes to the original pic. They are actually a pleasure to deal with. They just wont let you make the Pres. look bad or stupid. They actually have a dept. that deals with these matters. Dang; I probably have an FBI file now. image jws

A pic. of the Gallery. Blatant self promotion, well I reckon it is but I have heard from a few who desired a pic. When I look at the art posted it dawned on me that their request was justified. The artist, with good reason, need some assurance that there really is a Gallery.
Once again I would like to express my deep appreciation for the talented individuals who have contributed to this thread. I encourage all to carefully study the pics. they are amazing. You will learn not only about coins but also how hard it really is to get that pic. in just the right light, cropped etc. While I have no talent in this area I feel confident that the artist who have posted will give you the benefit of their experience. They got me started and shared a wealth of information. I truly believe as we move into the future the ability to really "capture" that coin will become critical.
I have little experience in coins. I am fortunate to have access to some really neat equipment. My conclusion so far is that even a high quality scanner can not match someone who knows what he/she is doing with a camera. Just because you have years of experience taking photos; coins are a whole different challenge. I've been practicing like crazy but still have a long way to go. My experience tells me it's all in the lighting and the angle. I was wrong again. These are critical no doubt. The only thing harder to pic. is wildlife. They are both fun but to get that right pic can take months. jws

Now as to the poll, I've got a request in to the QA but have not heard a word. I'll get it up as soon as I get permission/knowledge. jws

Thanks to P8nt, I can put a poll up.

I will put a poll up but my present thinking is it will be near the end.

    My reasoning being:

A poll at this point would influence the input and would probably inhibit or constrain entries and encourage them to copy-cat the leader.

The whole objective is to encourage all to participate and build a collection of unique coin pics. we will all treasure.

I do not know how this will turn out and will probably be suprised as to what pic. wins. I do believe we will all learn from the experience and hopefully have a thread of great coin pics. people will use and enjoy.

I strongly encourage everyone to help each other and make this a learning experience.

My dream would be to have a pic. of every coin minted, the pic doesen't have to be great----who knows what the future will bring. The goal here I reckon is really not winning but contributing. My gut just tells me that in the future it will benefit the hobby. This could very well be a minor part of history. You all take care. jws

I don't see much gold in here and I imagine this picture would look absolutely stunning in a large format. image

In addition, I have much larger versions of this picture that I can send. This is the format that fits our website. If feel that this is the best gold photo that I have done yet.
