Belgian Gold Leopolds, another silly reason to buy a coin, Nazi gold story

Belgian Gold Leopolds are not as well known as French Gold Napoleons.

The term itself is found in only a few places; King Leopold II was not as well known
as Napoleon or Napoleon III.

After I placed an order for two Napoleons, I saw a news article about a small
hoard of gold coins found in Germany by a man with a metal detector.
The article appeared on July 15, 2015, but the find occurred several months earlier.

The man was exploring old burial mounds in the town of Lüneburg, south of Hamburg,
when he found some gold coins. He reported the find to authorities, and local archaelogists
arrived to find a total of 217 gold coins, also found were remnants of the container and
seals bearing the Nazi swastika and the stamp "Reichsbank Berlin".

The find consisted of 217 gold coins, all with a diameter of 21mm and weight of 6.45 grams.
The countries and totals were Belgium (128), France (74), Italy (12), and Austria-Hungary (3).
The dates ranged from 1831 to 1910, and the denominations were 20 francs or equivalents.
The current value of the coins based on the gold content was Euro €45,000 or US $49,500.

A news photograph of some of the coins showed mostly Belgian coins with King Leopold II on them,
which were made from 1867 to 1882.

I had to have one:

Neat coin and story. Makes you wonder how much of it is still buried in the fields (or old burial sites, apparently) of Europe.

Stories of Nazi gold are always interesting, even if in a slightly spooky sort of way.

Of course Leopold II had plenty of skeletons in his closet, too, from the colonization of the Congo.

Here's one story about the find, with pctures.

I have a gold Leopold image and it's one of three gold coins I have in my 'relatives Queen Victoria' gold coin collection.

Regarding the gold coins found with the Nazi seal I sadly suspect their provenance might be similar to the sack of diamonds lost in this awesome Documentary.
