False Dies
Hey guys. I sent off about 50 $1 from 1870s-1920s coins to PCGS to get graded. One of them came back as Counterfeit - False Dies. This particular coin was given to me as gift from a non-coin collector. I decided to throw it in with all the coins that did get graded just fine. The coin actually weighed like it should.… -

Re: Is it normal on a mercury to have a rotated reverse

<< <i> Opps....I used the never word. Generally speaking is it not true that the hammer die usually stays in place ? If this is not true much information that has been published is false. Ken >> It is emphatically NOT the case that the hammer die is less likely to rotate than the anvil die. This was a false assumption… -
Re: Warning- this is counterfeit - beware!
I always wonder how on "one-offs" they can be determined false/counterfeit when it seems the possibilities for a genuine MINT PRODUCED die are nearly endless. How do we know that the die was not some creation of a mint employee or engraver that potentially could be a trial or experiment for virtually any purpose that was… -
Re: Cool 1955 lincoln seen on ebay tonight
Called a false die overstrike. Take a coin and place it between two sheets of metal such as brass or aluminum. Squeeze it in a vise. The design will sink into the two sheets of metal, creating crude false dies. Turn the coin within the false dies and squeeze again. Some of the coin will be embossed up into the designs in… -
Re: In case you didn't know the story behind the 1964 silver dollar
. Think about this question: Would the US Mint in Philadelphia make dies for 1964 Peace Dollars and ship those dies to Denver without doing any trial strikes first ? I think Philadelphia would perform some striking tests before providing Denver with dies and ordering them to strike hundreds of thousands of coins. All the… -
Re: United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide

<< <i> << <i> << <i>I was reading Bill Fivaz' "United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide" and noticed there are only 2 gold coins that have been counterfeited prior to 1849... DCarr and Ambro, are you listening? >> In order to make near perfect false dies, the counterfeiter needs a near perfect genuine coin from which… -
Re: Does this $20 lib look alright?
Most counterfeits are made using transfer dies created using a genuine specimen of the coin to be counterfeited. If the genuine coin that is used to create the false dies used to strike the counterfeit coins has die cracks and contact marks, those defects will be transferred to the false die and then to the counterfeit… -
Re: What happened here? (real VG 1907 Indian struck by a fake 1909 Lincoln die)
The feathers behind Lincoln's back and head are flattened, as is the wreath just to the left of the right Wheat ear. The host coin was a genuine 1907 Indian Head Cent. I believe the coin was altered via these steps: False dies were made by squeezing a 1909 Lincoln cent in a vice, between to pieces of copper or other metal… -
