My numismatic report for January, and Long Beach show report - what a month it was !

I had about two year's worth of activity in the latter half of January (quite out of the ordinary), so here is my report. With a daughter due to start college in the fall, this will be my last major "fling" for quite a while. It started on 17 January when I had a late morning appointment to view (and possibly purchase)… -
DIGS O' THE DAY (2006-01-05): AN ODE TO NAKED DIRT, RETURN TO "INDIAN HEAD ALLEY"
DIGS O' THE DAY (2006-01-05, PART ONE): RURAL RELIC HUNTING AND AN ODE TO "NAKED DIRT" Today's outing was to be my first time out with a detector in more than four months. It was a far nicer day to be outdoors than it had been on the steamy summer night when I'd last hunted, in August of 2005. It was sunny with blue skies,… -
Re: Another Jeter debate thread because some just dont know how to have a little fun...
Here is an email I received just this week on the subject of shortstop defense. It is by John Dewan, who wrote The Fielding Bible. His outfit (ACTA) sends out weekly emails on a variety of baseball stuff. The email is free. Can Adam Everett lead MLB for the fifth straight year? May 23, 2007 Adam Everett is the best… -
Re: Buying 50K of Commons - what to pay?
I plan on being a serious buyer. One of my goals is to not cherry pick a collection offered to me and take the ALL good and ALL the bad components of the collection. Once I acquire both the good and the bad, I need to make sure I have a plan to move most of it quickly to reclaim my initial investment and to turn a small… -
Re: PRO Graded Mickey Mantle
Nick et al: When I was a kid in 1956, I trimmed many a 1955 and 56 Topps card to get sharp corners for flipping. Roll forward about 40 years, and I found dozens and dozens of these cards in a box set aside at my Mom's. I sold them to an auctioneer for $40. The lot included a Clemente, Killebrew, Ford, etc. About 2 weeks… -

Re: The Dale Murphy Master/Basic Collector's Thread
Sometime in the '80s my Dad & Mom took my brother and I to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA, just a 100 mile drive from our home. I was about 12 and my younger brother 9, and we were both giant baseball fans and baseball card collectors. Dale Murphy was in Williamsport for the LLWS hoopla. My family got… -
Re: My dearest friends

<< <i>I have been sitting in a dank and dismal prison cell for some time now, forgoing the pleasure of humanity in general and the world of coins in particular. I am being held for a crime that I did not commit, and fear that unseen forces are working for my demise. Witnesses have been found that will corroborate my… -
Re: Favourite Hockey sets to collect
i havent gotten into prewar stuff much, but ive always taken a liking to the c55 set and the 1939 OPC 5 by 7 issue 1950s- the 1951 Laval Dairy QMJHL Minor League set, with pre rookies of Jacques Plante and Jean Beliveau (absolutely impossible to find in high grades, due to it being the #1 card in the set). i also like the… -
Re: It's a small world after all (hummed to the Disney tune)
I have had several interesting small world encounters over my life but my most interesting one is this: My wife and I were on vacation on November in Germany a few years ago and went to Nueschwanstein (Ludwigs Castle) in Bavaria. In the group of about 20 people that we went through the castle with was an American family…
