Re: Learning to grade - seeking opinion on 1904 1C
The lowest curl has wear; the coin is a slider. There's either a verdigris or PVC spot on the obverse. The protected areas on the reverse being much darker than the obverse tells me that the coin at some point was recolored. I don't think it will slab and I don't like it. Problem-free coins of this ilk are cheap; I'd get… -
Re: This raw LowBall 1968-D Kennedy half dollar is auctioning at a crazy price. . .
In my opinion, using a rock tumbler or vibratory mill to simulate wear wouldn't be too challenging. Start with an aggressive media (to save time) then move to softer medias. The trick, I believe, is toning/patinating them so they look natural. Notice the staining on the coin in the OP. One advantage is that worn coins can… -
Had a good week/two of CAC reviews, anyone else have good/not-so-good CAC results to share?

Sharing some of my results, curious how others are fairing.... Grading Service: PCGS 13419810 Description: 1787 U.S. Colonial Issues Fugio STATES UNI MS63BN (I owned this coin for nearly 8 years, just sent it in recently...always thought it was one of the nicer 63BN's I've seen) Grading Service: PCGS 28757354 Description:… -
Re: 3D Copiers.....in their Infancy now....but
I remember the Bruce Willis sci fi movie The Fifth Element. The female heroine in that movie (Mila Jojovich) that saved the world from destruction was, in the beginning of the film, created from some tiny fragment of remnant dna/biological tissue. She was created in a machine that replicated the tissue at the molecular or… -
Re: Getting a refund on a BB'd coin

TomB - It's my understanding that minting facilities in St Petersburg in the 1840s were somewhat crude, and platinum is a very hard metal to work with. Back then it was not possible to heat platinum to the melting point, so planchets for these pieces were actually kind of "sintered" from granules which accounts for some of… -
Re: Does anyone use pressurized air to blow off coins before submission for grading?
I used to as from what I hear PCGS used to as well, but I heard they changed this process for the same reason I did; many of the coins I sprayed would get the measels (scattered milky white spots) after in the holder. You have to be very careful if you plan to try it at all, but I do not reccomend them. If you spray the… -
Re: Most Valuable Unopened
I don't disagree with ya. However remember the old saying that a little bit of knowledge is dangerous. i have handled countless thousands of 1960's baseball cards over the years. Numerous 1950's cards as well. I can spot a fake or doctored card from this era a mile away when the card is in hand. However with unopened… -
Re: What do you guys think about the ANA's $40 million coastal museum plans?
I reading the article, part of the 40 mil is going to the one in Colorado Springs. The SF museum makes since as it is tied to the existing project at the old SF Mint. DC makes sense as it is a huge historical tourist spot, and the coins are a big part of history. Perhaps they can get the Smithsonian to allow them to… -
