1855 2 1/2 Gold - PCGS "Alter Surfaces" - Can you see evidence?
Okay, I posted this coin a couple weeks back and said I was sending to PCGS for grading. Just got the results and PCGS say "altered surfaces." I am not a gold expert by any means but I interpret this to mean it is not counterfeit but has altered surfaces. I just can't see what they are seeing that I am apparently missing.… -
Eisenhower Class 2 Medals - Original Ikes

38.1mm silver. All struck by the Philadelphia Mint. Designer is Frank Gasparro. Japan is the rarest Class 2 with a net mintage of 86. Majority was melted after Ike's trip to Japan was cancelled at the last minute. The Paris Summit Class 2 is the most intriguing. The 1960 Paris Summit later collapsed when a U-2 spy plane… -
Russian 2 Kopek with a Coolness Factor

I picked this up this weekend and found something interesting on it. It's a Russian 2 Kopek and if you look close at the Reverse (upside down) There is some 'extra' lettering and the looks of a '1' or '4'. Hmm... After pulling out Krause I was able to match up the lettering with not one, but two other coins. The obverse… -

Some with no D showing are fakes, while others are relatively common… -

Re: A NewP - Santiago Mint - 1846 1/2 Real
It could be a 6 over 5. I have never seen an 1846 1/2 Real with such an overdate, but who knows. Conditions were still quite primitive at the Santiago mint in the 1840's. The "Condor Breaking Chains" was struck in 1/2 real, 1 real, 2 reales and 8 reales denominations. Generally, the 2 reales are the easiest to find, the 1… -
Re: Bust Half question: "Curly 2" 1827 and 1828
For the 1827, there are a number of square-2 die marriages, some of which are just R-1 to R-2. For the 1827 curled base 2, there are just two die marriages (someone correct me if my memory has failed), one is R-2 and one is R-4. So I can see how you would find it difficult to locate a curled base 2 variety. For 1828, there… -
