Spalling Many claims of "rusted dies" are actually metal fatigue. (See JK's comments, above.) Dies were carefully protected before use, and rarely put back into service. Protective coatings were applied as soon as hardened dies were cool, and removed just before use in the pressroom. There are identified exceptions, but… -
