Here is an educational link delineating the difference between a true doubled die and mechanical doubling. I hope that helps. In addition, to me mechanical doubling looks doubled underneath the letters while die doubling looks doubled on top of the letters. If that makes any sense to anyone other than myself. -Amanda -

Wow, Amanda. You are realy on! It looks like strike doubling to me as well. Look at the Y in liberty, as well. I like Amanda's description of the difference between strike doubling, where the die bounces during the strike compared to hub doubling, where the doubled image is on the die.
