I have to agree that die cracks are typically associated with die state. The problem in that assessment is that it's not strictly true. Some dies crack or shatter right off the bat due to annealing and hardening problems. Any time in a die's life, it can crack, so die state is not well measured by cracks alone. Another… -

I was taking a look at the NGC enewsletter, and it had an article on die cracks in a lot of the new Statehood Quarters. Does anyone know if die cracks on proofs are really considered mint errors (or quality control issues), and what do you think about NGC creating a special label indicating the die crack and its location?…
