I remember when these were being sold by the mint. If you bought the gold proof set, you got the 1995-W proof ASE for free. Collectors on a budget who collected the annual ASEs were not at all happy to say the least. :D -

Honestly, why wouldn’t you split it out of the set. The gold is / was worth 100% to 110% of melt, then dollar had a substantial premium. Buy the set, break it apart. -

Sure. No reason it couldn't be. edited to add... searching eBay for "1995W proof American silver eagle" gets you 31 results. A quick scan shows those to mostly be in TPG plastic, i don't see any in OGP with the gold coins. -

Yes, that was one of the first times the mint screwed the small collectors, and the mint didn't even realize it was doing it. Now the small collectors can go pound salt at the mint. The mint doesn’t care. The mint pays the limited mintage game and charges monopoly prices. -

Many of these sets were broke up by folks with hopes they had one that would grade PR-70. -

I was post-doc-ing at the time, still 8 or 9 years before I started collecting seriously again since high school. I'm not sure why, but I decided to purchase the set. I'm glad I did. I did break the set up years later. The ASE is in proof 69 uc plastic. -

I was all about buying this set for $999.95 at the time,(which was a large sum at the time for me), but then lost my job and decided not to go through with the purchase. Bad timing all around for me. In hindsight wished I had pulled the trigger, but my wife would have been pissed at me to this day!
