Re: Lets see some pics of EXTREME error coins!
a major error at the Mint resulted in the obverse die falling on the reverse die Looks like the obverse die did more than "fall". It SLAMMED into the reverse die. The obverse die actually reached into the recesses of the E of "ONE". Yet the clash only shows a small portion of the obverse die. I wonder if the dies hit at a… -
Re: Real or Fake Errors?, Can you tell me the type of Error?, Fun for all.
I agree with what GoldenEgg and Sean said, with these observations: 4 - Although I'm fairly certain it might be counterfeit, it's hard to know for sure because of the harsh cleaning and light polishing. I don't like how the date of the first strike is flattened, compared t the date of the second strike. Probably NG 5 Looks… -

U.S. Mint Cancelling Orders - Previous Situation
I can tell you that in 1996, when the Mint first offered the Cancelled Olympic Dies, this is what occured: Someone from the Treasury actually showed up at my ANA Table in NY that year, and showed me a cancelled Proof Olympic coin die. I had never seen anything so neat! They told me that in the fall, they were going to… -
Re: BRASS DIME? PICTURES
I have some brass seated dimes. I can't remember the dates, and I'm at work right now. They are struck counterfeits, from hand made false dies. You can examine the coins and see the flaws. They are contemporary and were made to circulate. The counterfeiters would plate them in a silver wash. They would put good silver in… -
Re: True or false: Forgers always leave tell-tale evidence of their work.
False. Fakes have made their way past the experts. One expert talked about a particular fake that was only detected when another coin surfaced with identical markers. This meant that two fakes had been made from the same set of fake dies with identical tell tale signs. If there was only one fake made from the fake die, it… -
Re: How important is die state towards your collecting goals?
Very informative thread. One of the coolest things about collecting Capped Bust Half Dimes was the entire idea of the progression of die wear being used to determine emission sequences and die marriages/ remarriages within the series. When I first read the Logan/McCloskey reference it really opened my eyes by putting forth… -
Re: Which 2021 Morgan dollar will be the most valuable?
@WCC all valid points. I can understand where you’re coming from and agree with almost all you have stated. I can only point towards the ASE program, mintage numbers for MS is 10s of millions. Granted many just stack them but the collector market appears strong. Again agreeing you need high grade to be worthwhile for… -
Re: Are die cracks on silver proof State Quarters considered mint errors, and should NGC specially label
I have to agree that die cracks are typically associated with die state. The problem in that assessment is that it's not strictly true. Some dies crack or shatter right off the bat due to annealing and hardening problems. Any time in a die's life, it can crack, so die state is not well measured by cracks alone. Another… -
Re: 1950 Satin Proof?
Likely a transition piece when the proof dies were reconditioned for the striking of business strikes. Wouldn't of made much sense retiring a limited used die or destroying it, not using it for other purposes. And, of course, under less hammer pressure. This is something all serious collectors need to watch for when…
