Re: This Day In History: FDR takes America off the gold standard
Mainly because scammers, cheats, and other "sharps" will do things like shaving, clipping, and other reduction in weight, as well as arbitrage (moving it to where it's worth more than face melted) and increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting. People like to point to 1933 and 1964 as watershed years, and of course they are… -
Re: Private Collector w/ 50-Coins. StGaudens, Liberty Head, 1995-W Silver Eagle. Open to 1895 Proof MSD.
Can you provide any references from any long time members on this forum or other coin groups such as Virtual Coin Show (VCS) or CDHCD? If so, my sincerest apologies. But at the moment you are a new member with posts bearing many hallmarks of being a scammer of which this forum has seen many times before. -
Re: An interesting approach on eBay ...? (what would you do)
Clearly this person is a SCAMMER — stay away There is no advantage for the buyer to request a sale away from eBay, clearly they are trying to get you away from the security framework of eBay. BLOCK and REPORT this person. Because the economy is bad, someone might get tempted to deal with them, but STAY AWAY -
Re: IMPORTANT Tip for Collectors!
How many times has someone sent in a $100 or $200 coin, had it stickered and had a modest increase in value as a result. And then, peeled it of and sold it to a scammer that put it on an expensive coin? And how many of the latter coins are out there now? This thread doesn' t affect me, as the only stickered coins I have… -

Re: Suspicious buyers--can you cancel ebay sale without trouble?
OK you made me do it. It seems the address is at best a forwarding agent. That allows overseas bidders to circumvent any seller policies about domestic-only sales. At worst, it's an outright scam, providing enough uncertainty that a buyer can plausibly claim non-receipt. Since ebay no longer allows sellers to leave… -
Re: A New Low - Kid's Collection Stolen From Storage Unit
The irony here is that this whole thread was started by someone who wanted to reach out and send some Will Clark cards to a lady whose son who had his collection stolen. I mean, come on Rich, would anyone trying to scam someone really ask for Will Clark cards, and raw ones at that?? I don't think so. It just doesn't make… -
Re: Need help with this 1982 penny
Metals are malleable, especially copper. Not an error coin that would make it valuable or desirable, but good to study to learn about machine doubling. If you felt like it you could move the metal around in a similar way with a screwdriver and a small hammer because metal is so malleable. The buzz words “no mint mark” and… -
Re: Rare Coins as Investment
<< <i>Look, it is fine to warn wannabee investors about the pitfalls of investing. The abstract points out numerous pitfalls. But I take issue with your notion that most wealthy beginners would fall scam to telemarketers, etc. Most wealthy people I know got there buy hard work and scrutiny over what they are buying. ... To…
