Re: Childhood Coin Stories
I was 9 or 10 years old..about 1960 and we were visiting friends in Sioux Falls. This guy a couple of years younger than i was showed me his Indian Head Penny collection. I thought it was the neates thing I had ever seen because I'd never seen an Indian Head Penny period! Next day I'm up on Phillips Ave. at the drug store… -
Re: what will she grade? i was super excited when i found her.

Here it is... Recently acquired this 1893-O which is a previously unreported type (C3 reverse). It is definitely part of the vintage privately-made "family" since the obverse is the same die which struck the privately-made VAMs 6 and 7. The tell-tale mark is the small dash above the "B" of PLURIBUS. The most interesting… -
Re: Which cent is scarcer, the 1922 plain or 1955 DDO?
If I were looking to buy or recommend either, I'd strongly prefer the 1955 doubled die - probably the grandaddy of all doubled dies, for its appearance and fame, it's a lot like the 1909-S VDB in that regard. Even "non error collectors" want to own it. The 1922-P is mushy and ugly no matter what. I think it takes its value… -
Re: Grading companies and attributions question

Perfectly put! As a father and grandfather, I have the same reaction to the name. @jesbroken You've asked an interesting question here. I don't know of any TPGs that document die state, and frankly, I'm not sure I'd want them to. As it stands, I catch slabbed coins that have misattributed varieties pretty often; I imagine… -

Re: Mint State 1880 Shield nickels and prices
As someone who has studied this issue in great depth, I second Conder's comments. There were only two obverse dies used for the entire issue, including both the (16000) business strikes and the (3200) proofs. The obverse dies correspond to Breen-2515 and Breen-2516. Both dies were used to strike proofs, and both dies were… -
Wall Street trader falls to death from Upper East Side apartment
A Wall Street trader and father of three died in a freak fall from his fifth-floor Upper East Side apartment, authorities said Monday. Keith Mastronardi, 31, was discovered dead about 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the courtyard behind his building on E.74th St. between First and Second Aves., police said. Sources said Mastronardi… -
Re: Mormon GTG - No cheating

Yes and no, there's a few things to consider there, . I guess if you want to be super strictly technical, but that's not how these have always been graded, * Planchet quality & strike - unstuck planchet observed on the other AU55 examples has that same roughness and texture. * Condition of the dies- Look at the surface… -
Re: 1919 Mercury Dime - CONFIRMED: DDO Discovery Piece (Census in 1st post)
<< <i> << <i>I'm on the edge of my seat until you post the results. >> Thank you (and everyone else), I'm on the edge myself. The coin is off to Bill Fivaz, seems like the opinions have slowed down, some for some against DDO. So... while I and others wait for the experts opinion, let's play hypothetical for a minute to… -
My big FUN show purchase – A 1797 16 Star Dime
Years ago I owned a 1797, 16 star dime. I sold the piece when I bought an upgrade for the type. A few months ago I bid on a 1797, 16 star dime in a similar grade to the one I had sold, but didn’t get it. I found out that a dealer had bought it. He and I met at the FUN show, and we agreed on a price. The grade is PCGS…
