Hello Mr. T.,
I have a Madrid hotel suggestion that is well located and very reasonably priced. Its odd name is “SLEEP’n Atocha”, a short walk from Atocha Station, Reina Sofia and the Prado. Bonus: no chic boutiques in the immediate area, but still less than a 1km walk to the Westin Palace Hotel.
I stayed there for a few nights 2 years ago and found it very clean, surprisingly quiet, and with friendly staff and a decent breakfast. It isn’t the Ritz: somewhat charmless but I give them credit for trying, and the furnishings are like a next-level IKEA (not a compliment). But the location is great and the price is right. I developed a crush on a front desk clerk, so say hello to Veronica of you go.
Either way, have a great time — I’d love to hit the Madrid show, and will have to satisfy myself with NYINC again in less than 2 weeks.

thanks for the tip! that place looks fine, and there's many other hotels in the area that look perfectly decent - it seems far enough from the venue that low key collectors wouldn't be targeted, but the last thing I want is to go cheap on the hotel only to wind up shanked and robbed by a group of gypsies (or anyone) on my way back, that would suck

...I only say gypsies because around where I live in Portugal, they steal things without shame, and last month they shot one of their own at the mall, and robbed a business in a town nearby - this kind of violence is very rare here, and while people are inclusive and tolerant, the stereotype is undeniably accurate, I'm being descriptive, trying to paint a picture, I hope they reduce criminality and integrate into the local culture
