Once more, the Glendale Coin Club has decided to have medals struck for our members. And once again, because of the support this forum gives to our club each October when we sell our gold/silver coin raffle tickets, we have decided to invite forum members to purchase medals too if they are interested.
We have again commissioned Daniel Carr to strike our medals and he has prepared images of our 2016 design which are posted below. The medals will be 39mm in diameter and once again I think the design came out very well.
The obverse will be the same as our 2014 and 2015 medals, featuring the design from the 1925-S California Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Half Dollar which will be the size of an actual half dollar surrounded by our club name in incused lettering inside a sunken ring.
The reverse design is based on the 1894 California Midwinter Exposition Official Medal which was stuck by the U.S. Mint and is listed as HK-245 in the So-Called Dollar reference. This design was Charles Barber's interpretation of the California State Seal and has amazing detail.
We are once again selling our club medals on a pre-order basis only so that all can be made in a single run. On or about June 15, we will send in our final count of medals to be struck and we hope to have delivery by the end of July. After that run, we will instruct Mr. Carr to cancel our 2016 reverse die and no more of these medals will be produced. We're not sure how many will be made as it will be dependent on how many pre-orders we receive. So far, it is looking like the number ordered will be about the same or maybe even less than our 2014 and 2015 medals (see mintage figures below). After June 15, we will take no additional orders and you will have to rely on the secondary market if you wish to obtain one of these medals. For reference, our 2014 and 2015 medals have been very popular and in the aftermarket I have seen copper examples sell in the $20-$40 range and silver examples sell in the $50-$100+ range!
The pre-order prices of the medals are as follows:
39mm Copper Medal = $20 shipped
39mm Silver .999 One Ounce Medal ("ONE TROY OZ. 999 SILVER" marked on edge) = $50 shipped
...or get one of each of our copper and silver medals for $60 shipped!
And because many have asked in the past, we're making the gold version available to forum members this year too. These are just awesome pieces!
39mm Gold .999+ 50 Grams Medal ("50 GRAMS 999+ GOLD" marked on edge) approximately 1.6 troy ounces = $2500 shipped (price includes ANACS certification)
We are also planning on having medals with special finishes made as we did last year. Please note that each of these is finished by hand so they are a bit expensive and each will look slightly different, but they are quite amazing too. They will be available as follows:
39mm Antiqued Silver .999 One Ounce Medal ("ONE TROY OZ. 999 SILVER" marked on edge) = $85 each
An example of our 2015 medal with this finish can be seen HERE.
39mm Color Toned and Selectively Rhodium & Gold Plated Copper Medal = $85 each
An example of our 2015 medal with this finish can be seen HERE.
Finally, it looks like this will be the last medal Daniel Carr helps make for our club for at least the next couple of years. Having these medals made for the club is a lot of work for us at the club and a lot of work for Dan as well and doing one of these every year is just too much and can be quite expensive also. Accordingly, there will be no similar medals made by the Glendale Coin Club for at least the next couple of years. So, if you’ve been on the fence about ordering one of these in the past, don’t miss this last opportunity!
Please contact me if you have any questions or if you would like to place an order.
Thanks again!
