RYK's Brief Silver Dollar Coin Show Report, 10/04/12 (updated on 10/5)

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
Brief report on iPhone...

First table I visited, dealers were complaining that this used to be a good show... Personally, I think it would help if the promoters could get PCGS back.

Many dealers complained that they had trouble finding stuff to buy, even more than usual.

More unattended tables than I am used to seeing at this show.

Nothing for me to even think about bidding in the Scotsman auction.

Saw Dave Wnuck for first time at HLRC table.

Spent significant time with njcoincrank who had lots of cool stuff and stories, as usual. Bought a St. Louis theme medal from him.

Visited with forum members jmski and jaywalker. Also saw WTCG, who wondered how he ended up in such a miserable place. image

I would say it was one of the driest coin shows I have attended. No coins of interest for me. Moderate level of activity for a Thursday. I am glad that I have the coins that I do have. image

  • Thanks for the flash report, RYK. Even "dry shows" are worthwhile, as it helps us to recognize the significance of buying opportunities in the future.

Thanks, I do enjoy reports! Dry shows are ok, as sometimes it may force me to look out side my comfort zone, and maybe discover something new.

Hey - any day you get to hang out with njcoincrank and look at his inventory and talk numismatics is a great day in my book.

After all - where else can you get original packaging for a SCD?

  • Was there Thurs afternoon 1:30 till 4:30. First half day open to general public.

Attendance was a little light - but again its the first day, a Thursday, the Rams play tonight and the Cards tomorrow.

I walked in, went 20 steps to njcoincrank's table and spent ALL my money in 15 minutes. Maybe pullng the trigger a little too quick, but got three "perfect" 19th century type coins.

Then walked around looking at other tables - and did see more of interest than usual. Saw no one in a CRO hat -- so did not get to meet the famous RYK.

Then since I had spent all my money - I could not go back to that great PLO-PLO/8 game at Harrahs.

It was pretty cool to be table surfing and to run into RYK while he was talking with njcoincrank, who is also a pretty nice guy with alot of coin knowledge (and some nice stuff, too).

The show does seem to be smaller than it was a few years ago, but I was glad to see Tom Reynolds and Doug Bird. Two other copper dealers were there, but I didn't have enough time to see them - maybe tomorrow.

There seemed to be more ancient and foreign tables, at least on a percentage basis. For me, the show was a good start and the lighter traffic only made it easier to see into cases on a single pass.

I tried to get the attention of a couple different dealers, but to no avail. If anyone thinks that people aren't really looking, they should pay closer attention. I bought a couple nice Large Cents today, and hope to find one or two more maybe tomorrow.

I saw James Garcia on my way out, and he is upbeat as usual. I think that he and Scotsman should make a good combo.

Very cool. RYK and the Crank just landed in a footnote of something I am working on image
  • How was the show for bullion (both silver and gold)? Were there a lot of tables with bulk silver/circ silver dollars/art bars or anything like that?

Also, how many tables would you estimate are there?

    Thanks!
  • RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
I did not look specifically for bullion, but there seemed to be a fair amount there. I am not sure I would make a trip for bullion.

    150+ tables, I would guess.

If it's any consolation, there were tons of Morgans. image

Some more tidbits, since I have some time now...

I saw a very cool 1839 50c in PC 58 CAC with dramatic toning at the Bozarth table. I do not see it on their website or in their ebay store, but it made be take a double-take, twice.

To expand on the subject, now that it is in the books, this was one of the worst Scotsman auctions that I can remember. I did not look at everything, and I am sure that there were some excellent coins and good buys, but the quality and depth were both significantly lacking when compared to previous sales. One dealer told me he thought that perhaps hotel buyers have been cutting into their action. I wonder if there is increased competition into the mid-tier auction market with Great Collections, JJ Teaparty and Legend Morphy now in the mix. The other factor might be the proximity of this sale to their late July summer sale and the possibility that there was not enough time between the two consignment deadlines to reload. At any rate, I wish them luck and like them even more with James Garcia having a full time role.

The copper guys seemed mostly bored and idle, and I wonder how many more times Doug Bird is going to schlep to St. Louis from California to do the show. (I could say the same about some other dealers that are not reasonable driving distance.)

I saw a type coin I recently sold at the HLRC table and when I saw how it looked in the case, I was glad that I parted with it.

There was a paucity of dirty gold, southern gold that was not abused, CAC gold, gold in OGHs, and the other various attributes that I seek. One vest pocket dealer told me that while C and D gold are not moving, mostly because the better coins are generally in strong hands, that CC gold was currently the hottest. I was a bit surprised, and he challenged me to find any CC $20's on the floor, and much to my surprise, there was a single coin that I found, and it was expensive and not worth considering. I wish I bought and held onto more of these, but I am very happy with the three CC$20's in my collection.

Forum member, Jaywalker, who rarely if ever posts here was two coins away from a substantial collecting milestone (IMO)--the last 30 years of Liberty $10's. I really admired his approach to this project, and I think he did everything a knowledgeable and dedicated collector should do--he was patient (for both quality for the grade and price), he relentlessly pursued this subset, he defined a collection that superficially looks easy, but in fact is challenging, and he has worked on it for years. He is two coins away from completing it (I found one on the bourse and am not sure if he purchased it), and we discussed some options for taking it further. Oh, and he did this all without Bob Simpson's pocketbook or David Hall's access to the coins.

There was a very cool display of old coins, notes, and other exonumia, all in a pile in a case at Mike Orlando's table. I was not sure if these were for sale or not, but it looked very cool, and I thought I saw my missing Columbian Half in the mix. If I knew him, I would have asked to buy the half.

One dealer showed me a complete set of 144 commems in OGHs, all graded MS-65, that he had just purchased. The collector had an affinity for bright white, so this was not my kind of set. I do not know commems, but I feel that I can recognize when a coin stands out from the crowd, and there were a few that were clearly undergraded by one or two points and just dripping with luster. My OCD kicked in as I thought about ways to buy them and create a mini-set, but after a few minutes, I slammed on the breaks and put them all back. It helped that there was a collector at the table also going through the group that was commiserating with the dealer that there seems to be no floor for the value of average commems.

I am shocked to learn that Dimeman could leave a room full of dimes empty handed. I saw quite a few stunning merc dimes that seemed pretty cheap to me, and if dimes were my collecting interest, I would have taken one or two home.
