New here and need advice

I have some coins that were left to me by my grandfather. I know a little about coins, but still learning. I have Silver Eagles in plastic tubes, and a bag full of Morgan silver dollars. I know that the Eagles are all 2008 and I have never opened the plastic tubes, as my grandfather said it was not good to touch the coins with your hands. Now the bag of Morgan's are all in good shape, but do not look new, and he has marked on the bag, cull. I am getting married, and would like to sell some of these. I thought about eBay, but they really charge a lot to sell on there, and I really do not want to have to list all these coins individually, as I really don't have the time. I have a bunch of graded coins also, that's how I found this place. I guess my question after reading some of the messages, is should I break these up, or sell all together. I checked around town, and the places around here do not offer near what they are going for on auction sites. I thought about trying the man's new auction site that is listed on here, but just don't know. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks, Meagan

The silver eagles, or ASE's, go for around $2-4 over spot, minus the 1996 which has a bigger premium. The morgan dollars as culls, meaning no numismatic value, go for just the price of silver in them.

On my phone so can't link but price of silver can be found at kitco.com.

Price of silver coins can be found at coinflation.

You should have no trouble selling the tubes or the morgans as they are. A lot of people, myself included, buy ASE's by the tube. The morgans you can either sell as a whole or break them into lots. Just depends what you want to do. You can try listing them here but may need some references being new.

  • Thanks for the reply. I am assuming that spot is what silver price is at. I thought about listing on collectorscrave.com. I saw this posted in one of the threads, and it is a man who is a member here. I also saw people taking checks and MO. I think I would rather stick with PayPal. I already have an account, and they protect the seller and buyer. Thanks, Meagan

It may be worth it to take the time to list the coins you have and ask for advice on the US Coin forum. JMHO

Give collectors shot at the graded coins.Best,Lloydimage
Great coins are not cheap, and cheap coins are not great!
  • I will on the graded coins. PCGS has been real nice on the questions I have asked. I will probably put them on here next week, after I get them from the safe at my grandmothers.

With a 1000 coin bag of Morgans at stake, I would at least take a dozen or so typical examples down to the local coin shop and see what they think of them.
There isn't a huge difference between culls and average VG-VF circs, but enough to be worth checking into. While most dealers would not want to pay more than spot
for a bag of culls (probably a few % below spot), there are plenty of collectors and investors who love Morgans and would be tickled to get a bag of them...even culls at
spot or slightly higher. Too bad silver is still relatively weak. When that market picks up again a bag of Morgans will be in strong demand.

Do we know it's a 1000 coins, which we in the hobby know is a "bag". The OP just said "a bag" and is new to the hobby. She may not know when you say a bag, you mean 1000 coins.

Ampex If I were selling a large amount these folks are easy to deal with and buy prices fair. You won't get every last penny out of every item but nickle & dimming can take months.

    PM sent with my two-cents.

Lots of quirky little rules around here, Meagan. For instance, in the BST, you're only allowed one thread. So one of these may disappear on ya.....

But you can use the regular forum for multiple threads. image And congratulations on your coming wedding.

Edit to change "post" to "thread."
