1873 Victoria Farthing

I just got this yesterday out of a bin of junk coins for $0.30 USD. I am very pleased with it, although there is a smudge of some sort -- perhaps tarnish -- right on Vicky's cheek. The coin is bright copper, has absolutely full detail, and has minimal wear. Every strand of hair on her head is visible, and her dress detail is present. The reverse contains some wear on the highest points, but is still sharp, albeit tarnished.

What do you guys think? How much does the tarnish or whatever it is on her cheek affect the grade?

    Haha, I don't think $1.20 will do it on this one...I might throw it up on Ebay and see what it gets. Or I'll send it for grading and keep it, since I do have a small British collection.

    I don't know. If it truly can grade MS60, then the $17.00 it costs me to have this graded could solidify a price tag of 300 times my cost.

    Not to burst your bubble, but IMO that farthing will not grade at PCGS, nor ATS. It still has a good bit of corrosion around the rim area (i.e. cupric chloride), and the spot on the cheek was most likely a cupric oxide or chloride formation which has been removed via dipping or some other method.

    However, at 30 cents you got a good deal.

    Also, the thin hairline extending from the chin is owing to a reverse die clash.

    Thanks for spotting that die clash! As for corrosion, I was told on another forum that this coin would have been artificially blackened at the mint upon issue, and that the black is likely residual blacking left on the coin after the course of commerce wore off the rest. Have you ever heard of anything like that?

    Hello,

    Nice pick-up.

    I am with MacCrimmon, current bronze disease and a past cleaning to remove corrosion. Farthings were mint darkened from 1897 until 1917, but not as early as 1873.
    Also agree on the die clash on the obverse...I also see clash behind Vicky's head

    Still a cool pick-up.
