found another early date jeton...

It's been very difficult lately to find a pre-1700 silver jeton with a decent look to it, but this one came up on Ebay the other week and I had to jump. It's very similar to another that I've had for a long time, but different enough to justify the purchase.

Also, as some of you probably know, taking a decent picture was a task in itself. This is the best image that I could come up with so far-

Which goes nicely with this one, an earlier Nicholas de Bailleul jeton that I found a while back-

It seems like only a couple times a year that a really nice old jeton comes around. My multiple daily searches of Ebay pay off once in a while, but I don't know how I'd find stuff like this otherwise. I wasn't collecting back before the internet, but I can imagine how different (and more difficult) it would have been compared with today.

Since you're a mere mortal like many of us, and not one of those mega-deep-pocket guys, that's probably something to be thankful for!

You know, I think it's an area that works well for me - the prices are still within reach, the rarities haven't become too well-known yet, and the collector pool is just small enough that the competition isn't overbearing. I think I'll roll with it for a while, since I'm having such a good time.image

I've posted this one before, but here's one of the only other higher-grade jeton that I was able to find from this era.
Most others from the era have signs of heavy circulation, or corrosion from being in the ground for a long time. This one
has a planchet flaw, but is a pretty rare issue. It's one of the first jetons issued for the maritime assurances of France.

These jetons are great! Is there a comprehensive reference on these?

Michael Mitchiner's Jetons, Medalets and Tokens Vol. 2 is the only thing close to comprehensive that I've come across that is in English. It's a good source of info and examples, but the book's layout is awkward and the pricetag is over $100. There are a lot of French guides and catalogues, but I haven't brought myself to purchase any of them yet, probably because the French to English translation issue is so slow and tedious.

Oh, and check my website for the very basics, it's a good start.image
