Are price guides really serious about being accurate?

As many of you are well too aware, I collect British 1958 VIP proof halfpennies. I have purchased two of these in the last month. Recently I sent a message to the NGC Ask NumisMedia forum asking them:
1. if they wanted an image of a 1958 VIP proof 1/2d since they don't have one on their site
2. if they wanted a real world value for this coin.
no reply. I guess they are just happy copying whatever is in Krause and aren't serious with up to date evaluation.
end of rant.

<< <i> I suspect you have previous sales / auction records that will back-up your price assessment? >>
Yes, and a depleted bank account as proof too.

PM me with thoughts as well as I may be able to help.
Regardless, please do give your rationale for why prices should be adjusted and not just what you paid - do keep in mind that the cataloger has to create a universal tome and that prices may from place to place.
On this forum I would venture out to say that L500 is plenty fair, although to be fair the Bole (sp?) recent sale of 6ds had some of them go for 950 pounds from the 1950s; is a 6d worth more than an half pence? A penny on the other hand would definately be.
Well, just Love coins, period.
Besides, you can set the price since you own most of the 58's now.
