    In the 1970's and 1980's, during the winter months the Orioles would put together a basketball team to play area teams for charitable purposes (this was back when players lived in the Baltimore area during the off season)....This particular picture was taken in January 1988

    used to watch Murray, Palmer, Dauer, etc play basketball at a local high school...1980 or so era

    Cool pic! I think he played hoop in high school too, didn't he?

    From what I understand, his son Ryan is following in his Dad's large footsteps (basketball/baseball) and doing pretty well at both.

    I remember reading back in the day that Cal built a full size gym on his property and would host weekly pickup games that many MLB and NBA players would attend.

    He actually didn't; he played baseball & soccer..................

    When I was a kid in the Dallas area, the Cowboys came and played our volunteer fire department in a charity basketball game in our high school gym every year. I lived in a town of about 4000 people. I remember Ed Jones and Tony Dorsett playing in those games and still have some autographs. Hard to imagine any of the modern day million dollar babies doing something like this today (I know I wouldn't risk some high school hero taking my legs out on a layup to have his shining moment).
