ajaan's Pittsburgh ANA show report -very long

The Buffalo Numismatic Association, of which I am a member, chartered a bus on Friday to go to the ANA show in Pittsburgh. I arrived at the departure site at 6:30 AM as directed for a 6:45 AM leave time. The bus showed up at around 6:40 AM. I thought to myself "no problem, we should be on the road in 10 minutes or so". Well, our club President didn't show up until 7:00 because he stopped to get coffee and donuts for everyone, nice thought but this caused us to leave 25 minutes late. We get on the road and about 40 miles outside of Buffalo out bus loses all power. The drives coasts to a stop at the side of I-90. He gets out of the bus, resets something in back, calls his company and finally is able to get the bus restarted. Off down I-90 we go, again.

Uneventful trip, get to Pittsburgh around 11:00 AM. After paying my entrance fee, my first stop was at Todd Pollack's, blue62vette, table to drop off a few coins for imaging. Well Todd wasn't there at the moment but Charmy, pennylady?, was and said he should be right back. Charmy is a very nice friendly lady with a glass of wine on her back table. I walked around the bourse for a few minutes and went back to Todd's table and he was there. I dropped off the coins for imaging.

My next stop was at jfoot13's , Ken V., table. I had made arrangements with Gene, 1960NYGiants, to meet there at noon. Since I was early, I introduced myself to Ken, we talked a little, and I told him I'll be back at noon. I then went to scope out the bourse more closely. For those of you who have never been to an ANA show, there are a lot of tables there. My next stop was to introduce myself to Dan Lewis, Blue Mountain Coins. We had spoken via phone previously and I wanted to meet him in person; nice, personalble guy. We BSed for a while and then I headed back to Ken's table to see if Gene was there. Gene showed up and since neither of us had a car, we decide to have lunch right at the show. We had a nice visit, did a little show an tell and each of us set off to find some goodies to buy.

I walked around the floor checking out various dealer, it was not very crownded so I had no problem getting through the aisles. I bought some US Morgan Dollars image hoping silver goes up this week and mainly just looked at dealers tables looking to add to my low grade US circ collection, no luck at all on this front.

At 1:00 PM I went back to Todd's table to pick up my coins I had him image. I dropped off some very difficult coins to image and Todd did his usual fantastic job imaging all of them.

More coin hunting, I see this is getting to be too long of a report, I ended up at Steve Corvin's table, bought a Greek coin there. Bought a widow's mite from Allen Berman, another Greek coin from someone else, a 1958 Canadian Dollar from Ken, met and talked a while with Kurt, "Kove" a liteside dealer, and met John at CRO. My final buy was some fantastically toned Canadian Cased Dollars which I brought back to Todd to image. Since it was late and our bus was leaving at 4:00 PM Todd was able to fit my Canadian coins into his schedule, thank you Todd so much.

Bus left Pittsburgh at 4:10 PM, about 25 miles out side of Buffalo, the bus loses all power again, coast to the side of I-90, restart the bus, get back to meeting place at 7:50 PM.

Overall, great trip! I loved meeting everyone and walking the floor. I wish we would have had more time there but I can't complain since the B.N.A. only charged members $20 for the bus which I thank them for.

P.S. of my 16,000+ posts, this is by far my longest. If I left anyone out of the report, please accept my apologies and let me know.

There were a fair number of World Coin dealers there and for the most part they were located in the same section. I was surprised to see how many dealers had Ancient coins for sale. I personally thought a lot of the pricing for coins was high considering the economic conditions.

Ancients in general have been going up at a considerable rate for many months now. Ive noticed it.

But I admit when I went to Long Beach this past sept. & even Feb. the prices for run of the mill ancients were laughable.

Nice report Don. I enjoyed reading it. Apart from the bus breaking down it sounds like a fun day, especially getting to meet some fellow board members.

Hus, I beg to differ. Imagining Don's face during the morning delay and when the bus broke down before they got back to Buffalo, were the funniest parts of the report. image

I was pissed when the bus broke down on the way there and the driver said they may have to send another bus. That would have been at least an hour delay. The break down on the way home wouldn't have been so bad, I would have had Kelly come pick me up. image
