My scales show it weighing 2.9 grams
A tenth-ecu (or 10-sols piece) would be almost US nickel sized, I guess. The correct weight on this type would be 3.059 grams, assuming I've chosen the correct type. The discrepancy of your piece being a bit underweight could be easily explained by the amount of wear on the coin and perhaps a small discrepancy with your scale.
The 1716-C tenth-ecu with the crowned circular arms on the reverse like this would be KM418.3, Caen mint, .917 silver/.0902 oz. ASW. Mintage is unrecorded and the Fourth Edition (ca. 2007) catalog values are $7.00 VG, $15.00 Fine. That piece looks like a VG with scratches to me. Nevertheless, I think the catalog's pretty ridiculously low.
PS- regardless of its technical grade and monetary value (or lack thereof), I like it. Cool old coin. Love the "babyhead" Louis XV.
As for the catalog's listed price, what's up with that?? For the simple fact that the coin is nearly 300 years old it should bring more than 7 bucks
In an eBay auction, I would not have been at all surprised to see a coin like this close in the low two-figures. European coins from the colonial era are often popular with American collectors. However, eBay's been pretty depressed lately- it's a buyer's market for sure.
So the upshot is, you've got a coin that's high in coolness factor but low in technical grade and monetary value.
