Ever feel taken?

I understand that once a deal is done, it's the buyer's will do to whatever he wants, but did you ever feel that as a seller that you got taken here on the boards?

For example, you gave a buyer a great deal based on his desire to complete a set, then he lists your lot for sale a short time later?

Or you give a quantity discount on a group of cards, only to see the buyer re-list them as the same group at a premium or individually at a great premium?

Is there a "cool" amount of time before you flip something here on the boards?

If his pretense was to complete his set, and that was the reason he got a deal, then flipping it for a profit is sort of lousy

As a Tigers fan, I feel taken because Leyland took Scherzer out of the game in the 7th.

And I agree 100% with hammered.

sold a highend card under previous sales, which was much higher quality than previous sales, at a discount, to see it sold for a profit on Ebay weeks later... lesson learned, i moved on.

if you make your deals here without fear of other people's motives, you won't lose sleep.

to be any good at cards you need to hustle, but maybe it's not so cool to hustle your "friends".

one key element to consider is that anything of value is worthwhile to a hustler who wants to profit by it if something better comes along.
  • If they said they were going to use it to build a set, and it is missing a majority of it before the sale I wouldn't have a problem.

If they stated they were going to do that and are ONLY selling then I would have issues (I will give collectors deals on final cards if my money is made already).

I say, if you make a sale, after the sale then move on. Ive had people profit off my sales before and Im sure they will again many more times. If you are happy with what you got for the card(s), dont worry on it.

Set your price and stick with it. It does not matter what happens beyond that.
  • I figure a deal is a deal and once paid for its their card to do as they please, that said I would not give a discount to any card for completion unless I really knew the collector to ensure it was staying in his collection. Anyone saying any other plea would be put in with any other hard luck story I here from time to time (lost job, sick, etc), I feel sorry but that will not affect my price.

I am also now much more careful when I give out a freebie here and there because in the past I have had them flipped shortly after because of some sad story. Plus with the scams that I have seen on here alone with Gary, guys kids collecting T206's, supposed dead guys fund, etc you really have to be smart and careful.

I've bought cards before from board members and then sold them shortly after. I have done this a few times and everytime it was not to make a profit on the item it was due to a change in my focus. Usually I decided to change up the collection while waiting on the card to arrive or shortly after it did. I hope that no one was ever offended by my actions and everytime I sold the card in question along with 75% to all of my collection at once.

A while ago, I gifted a card to somebody on the boards. I thought it would help him upgrade his set--no big deal.

Much later on, he decided to sell the entire set (of which this card was a part), so he PM'd me and asked if I wanted it back, knowing that it was a gift. I appreciated that gesture very much and was fine with him selling the card as part of the set sale.

Personally, I think it's really tacky when board members quickly flip freebies or highly discounted cards from other board members. At least have the courtesy to contact the person who gave it to you, tell them your circumstances, and ask them if they're ok with you selling it. After all, you are potentially profiting on their generosity. You're under no obligation to do so, but it's good form IMHO.

People learn really fast on the boards who not to send freebies to.
