04- BRITISH HONDURAS (BELIZE), 50 CENTS, KM10.
001 1901 B.HONDURAS 50C VF DETAILS SCRATCHES
(My previous grade: Raw VF w/minor hairlines)
No huge surprise. Call this a neutral outcome.

08- CANADA, 25 CENTS, KM5.
002 1901 CANADA 25C VF 30
(My previous grade: Raw VF, ex-ICCS VF20)
A modest upgrade. Cool!

09- CANADA, 50 CENTS, KM6.
003 1901 CANADA 50C G 6
(My previous grade: Raw G+, borderline VG)
Right on the money.

10- CEYLON (SRI LANKA), 1/4 CENT, KM90.
004 1901 CEYLON 1/4C MS 63 BN
(My previous grade: Raw BU, maybe proof)
Eh, OK. Slightly disappointed, but maybe my expectations were unrealistic. This coin is gorgeous in hand, though tiny.
005 1901 CEYLON 1/2C MS 63 RB
(My previous grade: Raw UNC, mostly Red)
Right on the money.

17- CYPRUS, 18 PIASTRES, KM7.
006 1901 CYPRUS 18P VG 10
(My previous grade: Raw VG+, borderline F)
Right on the money.

18- GREAT BRITAIN, 1 FARTHING, KM788.2.
007 1901 G.BRITAIN BLACKENED AT MINT 1/4P MS 61 BN
(My previous grade: Raw UNC, mint-blackened finish)
No real surprise there. About on par with expectations.

20- GREAT BRITAIN, 1 PENNY (BRONZE), KM790.
008 1901 G.BRITAIN PENNY MS 63 RB
(My previous grade: Raw BU, mostly Red)
Minor disappointment. This thing looked super red and almost prooflike in hand. Pix don't fully capture it.

26- GREAT BRITAIN, 1 SHILLING, KM780.
009 1901 G.BRITAIN 1S MS 64
(My previous grade: Raw BU)
Sweet! Sort of expected a 63!

27- GREAT BRITAIN, 1 FLORIN, KM781.
010 1901 G.BRITAIN 2S MS 64
(My previous grade: Raw toned UNC, ex-NGC MS65)
Eh. One point lower than the last time they graded it. (I bought it raw- the previous owner had cracked it out, I guess. I have the original insert.)

28- GREAT BRITAIN, 1/2 CROWN, KM782.
011 1901 G.BRITAIN 1/2C MS 63
(My previous grade: Raw BU)
Bang on with expectations. Cool.

31- HONG KONG, 1 CENT, KM4.3, (1901 "plain").
012 1901 HONG KONG CENT MS 63 RB
(My previous grade: Raw AU+, RB)
Yay! A home run, as far as I'm concerned!

33- HONG KONG, 10 CENTS, KM6.3.
013 1901 HONG KONG 10C MS 63
(My previous grade: Raw BU)
Right on the money.

36- (BRITISH) INDIA, 1/4 ANNA, KM486.
014 1901(C) INDIA 1/4A UNC DETAILS ALTERED COLOR
(My previous grade: Raw BU, Red)
Eh. Bummer. Then again, the color did look a bit odd. Oh well.

40- STRAITS SETTLEMENTS (MALAYSIA), 1/4 CENT, KM14.
015 1901 STRAITS 1/4C MS 62 BN
(My previous grade: Raw AU+)
Another good score, I think! Tough little coin, too.

41- STRAITS SETTLEMENTS (MALAYSIA), 1 CENT, KM16.
016 1901 STRAITS CENT AU DETAILS REV PLANCHET FLAW
(My previous grade: raw AU+, RB, planchet flaw or lamination?)
Eh. On par with expectations, but I wasn't sure if the planchet flaw would spank it or not. Guess it was too much for 'em.

43- STRAITS SETTLEMENTS (MALAYSIA), 10 CENTS, KM11.
017 1901 STRAITS 10C AU 58
(My previous grade: Raw AU+, looks BU)
Bang, spot on the money.

37- (BRITISH) INDIA, 2 ANNAS, KM488.
018 1901C INDIA 2A MS 65
(My previous grade: Raw AU w/iridescent toning)
Wow!!!

019 1901B INDIA TYPE A/1 RUPEE AU DETAILS SURFACE HAIRLINES
(My previous grade: Raw UNC)
Eh. I got this piece in a PVC-infested holder, acetoned it, and then lightly baked it because it was too white after a dip. That caused some nice gold color. I guess my cleaning caused hairlines, though. It's a pretty coin and I got it cheap (well below current melt, I'm sure), so oh well. I expected a spanking for the AT but didn't see any hairlines (I used a soft cloth when treating the PVC.) Maybe they were already there.

44- STRAITS SETTLEMENTS (MALAYSIA), 20 CENTS, KM12.
020 1901 STRAITS 20C XF 40
(My previous grade: Raw VF+, borderline XF)
Cool.

There remain a small handful of coins that were not worth the slab fees or that I know will not grade. But it feels nice to have made this a respectable set that has come a long way from its very humble beginnings.
Of course I had a lot of help. Special kudos and thanks to Dimitri/SYRACUSIAN and Don/ajaan who have been contributors and cheerleaders to this collection over the past decade.
As always thanks for sharing!

<< <i>I don't reply to threads very much but had to on this one. First, it's a really cool set and idea. Second, your post are always entertaining to read and the comments really paint a picture. I can relate to the process you are going through. I am building a 1944 world coin collection. My dad bought a collection about 15 years ago and someone who was born in this year had completed about half of it. About 2 years ago I started working on completing it and am probably about 70-75 percent done. Maybe I can find some time when the kids are asleep to photograph and start posting what I have.
As always thanks for sharing! >>
I take that as high praise when an otherwise "strong silent type" comes out of the shadows to say something nice. Thanks!

I wonder if its worth cracking out and trying this technique (not that I have, so I don't know if it would help) http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=827701 to recolour the 36- (BRITISH) INDIA, 1/4 ANNA, KM486.
