is AGW stated in terms of .999 purity equivalent?

I've always wondered about this.
When in doubt, don't.

AGW means Avoirdupois Gold Weight, or Actual Gold Weight.

.999 (or .900, or whatever) is the purity, or "fine" standard, meaning the percentage of purity (.999 is 99.9% pure, .925 silver is 92.5% pure, and so on.)

The AGW or ASW (or APW, for platinum) is the actual amount of bullion in the coin.

So a Mercury dime, for example, is .900 fine silver, with an ASW of .07234 oz.

That is what I had thought, but wasn't totally sure about. Thanks very much for the confirmation.
