Take a look at lot 3015

Edward VIII? Really? Crowned May 12, 1937?

And that is on the NGC Slab

    Correction:

    Auction 3015, Lot 74298

That thing is one of those narsty CoinCraft abominations from the mid 1990's. Stupid is as stupid does.

    Hi guys-

Just wanted to note that this piece is listed in Brown's British Historical Medals (Volume 3) as #4302:

AV, AR 33 by MCM (probably W. McMillan)

    AV RR; AR C.

It was struck as a memento of the coronation that never occurred, much like a Superbowl Champions t-shirt with the losing team on it (wrong, but not in any way false).

    Best regards,

    James, Northeast

Here is another example, this one from the famous Giordano collection:

The dies are extremely polished for the issue and the lettering is rounded.

Hmmm...link does not seem to be working. Try copying and pasting this:

image Much like many Franklin mint issues previously.

Worth melt and not one cent more. Is there any collector base for things like this?

I was initially struck (no pun intended...) by the May 12, 1937 date than the quality of the coin- apparently the May 12, 1937 Coronation Date was set for Edward VIII- The date was kept after he abdicated and was still the date George VI was crowned. I thought that was interesting and some unanticipated royal trivia

After looking at the medal again, it does not have the look one would expect for such an item- However, I have no doubt it is real and likely quite desirable. I suspect it was given worthy scrutiny
