ANDA Coin and Banknote Show in Melbourne

I hopped on the one hour flight from Adelaide, South Australia to Melbourne, Victoria on Saturday to attend the 2011 ANDA Coin and Banknote Show which ran on Saturday and Sunday just last weekend. ANDA (the Australasian Numismatic Dealers Association) holds several shows a year at various cities in Australia. Apart from some local club/dealer shows in a very few cities they are about the only real coin shows on in Australia each year. Because of this my partner and I always try to attend most shows but this year costs and children meant that only I got to go to this one. Because of this it really ended up being a buying trip rather than the vacation it usually is. The best thing about the trip was sharing a car from the airport to the show and back again with a couple of attending dealers that I know. They had some great stories to tell and managed to get me into the show before opening so I could browse the tables before the general public entered.
Attendance at the show was good, but as always the NCLT from the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint seemed to attract the most attention. I managed to pick up some nice Australian pre-decimal material for my partners online coin biz and snuck in some browsing of world material for myself once I'd gone over all the Australian coins in the place. I bought 4 coins for myself for the grand total of $160. These included an Irish penny for my Irish set and a couple of mid grade ZAR pieces. But my pickup of the day (and probably the year for me) was this British Trade dollar hidden away at the back of a very old and tattered folder that hadn't been looked at for a long time by the dealer I think. I'd only planned to spend $50 or so on myself but the trade dollar at $99 was too much of a bargain to pass up.

I had one of these for some time and sold it a few months ago in lesser condition. Got $ 230 for is...
<< <i>Out of curiosity, with Australia being so close to the Philippines (relatively speaking), did you notice if there was a significant representation of US-Philippines coinage at the show? One of the biggest obstacles to my collecting interest is availability of quality material, rather than cost, though cost does indeed sometimes play a big factor. >>
Non Australian coins are not stocked heavily by Australian dealers. I saw some Philippines material but it was all post 1940 and saw nothing any earlier at all. If you wanted to make contact with a dealer who does have good world material then I'd try IS Wright (who have offices in Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide). They also have a mail auction and you can see the catalogue here : http://www.ausnumis.com.au/ . All the lots are available for viewing in my home town so if you wanted something looked at let me know and I'll take a look when I am in there doing my viewing next week.
Well, part of the fun in collecting should be the challenge, should it not?
