Cut up '77 to '80 Russian sets?
I've got only several but am thinking of putting the 1 R's in the safety deposit box.
Russia has gone bonkers in the new Krause with some 24000% gains. The '91 mint
set went from $20 to $2875.
Any opinions at all would be appreciated.

<< <i>My first thought- are people actually paying $2875 for those sets? Just because it's in Krause... >>
I don't know. It could even be a misprint.

Wouldn't be the first time.
edited to add... I posted this in another thread:
The 2009 Krause lists a Mexico 50 centavos 1876 A . L (note the dot) as rare and unpriced, with the no dot variety priced as common. In the 2010 Krause, both are priced as common.
Color me suspicious, but I have a hard time believing radical pricing changes from one edition to the next (not that it can never happen, of course).

<< <i>Holy crap I need to get a new Krause book. How much are the 1987 sets priced at? >>
$30.
<< <i>There are two 1991 mint sets in the 2011 edition, one valued at $20 and one at $1950. How many 1991's are there in the new edition? >>
Different colours in the holder of the coins. Makes all the difference. The crazy part about Goznak was that when they ran out of one colour, they would just use something else - supply in the USSR was always a problem.
Sadly this also applied to cars, so you could wait 5-10 years to buy a Lada, and then when it came finally the front and back seats could be different colours and you had no recourse other than to refuse the car - which you would be a fool to do. Ladas have to be one of the worst cars ever, I see so many of them broken down on side of the road it is pitiful. Even the post USSR Russian made cars are still way behind in quality.

According to my catalog, the sets contain different coins.

The other set is a three coin paladium set with 5, 10, and 25 Rouble coins. It is actually
reported to have decreased in price from $1950 to $1600.
There is often a distinct color difference from one mint set to another. I had always just
assumed it was because they were made in batches like US souvenir sets. It's interesting
that it's because of supply problems.
There's no set premium so I may as well just put the good coins in my safety deposit box. These
packages are fairly stable but the coins weren't well cleaned so they often will corode badly. It would
be a good idea to get them all out and stabilize them in acetone anyway.
Besides I collect the mint and proof set tokens and need a couple of these.
