1974 Topps/OPC Gary Carter customs

Before I print my latest customs, I thought I'd offer you a preview in hopes that if you spot any errors, inaccuracies, etc., I can correct them before I put ink on paper.

Special thanks to OPC hockey specialist Bobby Burrell for hooking me up with a Canadian French speaker to give me the best possible translation for the OPC back.

Looks great! What year did Topps switch to the cup for All-Star Rookie cards from the big trophy? '72 or '73ish?

Love the pic. I sat in those bleachers hundreds of times watching the West Palm Beach Expos. And the Montreal Expos in spring training. Carter still lives just a few miles from the old field.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody.

I thought about cropping the photo more tightly, but I wanted to get those shin guards in.

Daivd, I make my own templates. I scan in a genuine card, then clean up the off-registrations, etc., mathcing the fonts as closely as I can.
I print my fronts and backs on full-sheet label paper and sandwhich a piece of cardboard between. I usually work with "sheets" of eight or nine cards.

  • The card looks awesome! Good job!

A few things I'd change though:
    - On the Topps back, you wrote "Wgt. 200" while on the OPC back, you wrote "Wgt: 200". I'd write them both the same way, unless that's how you wanted it.
    - On the OPC back, "jouer au football á UCLA" should read "jouer au football à UCLA". The accent on the "a" needs to be fixed...
    - On the OPC back, "dans la 3ieme ronde du repêchage" should read "dans la 3e ronde du repêchage". The correct way to write "3rd" in French is "3e". PROOF
    - On the OPC back, above the stat lines, "Fiche comme frappeur dans les mineure" should read "Fiche comme frappeur dans les mineures"

Finally, if it was me, here's how I'd translate "Gary declined an offer to play football for UCLA." : "Gary a décliné une offre de jouer au football pour UCLA." The way you have it written right now would translate to "Gary got an offer to play football in UCLA but he declined that offer.", which almost means the same thing, but is not the exact translation.

If you need more help with French translations, don't hesitate to PM me, as French is my first language and the language I use every day.

Jess418, I thought that was phased odd, but I took French in High School and that was over 25 years ago. I thought if I made the NHL I might need to know French...LOL.

Bob, awesome card as always. image

I agree that you shouldn't crop the front anymore as I like the look with the skin guard too. This would be a great card to get Gary's signature on. I hope he is able to beat this thing.

    Hello Jess,

Thanks for the language critque. Before I consider making changes, is your French, French-French or Canadian-French?
  • AUPTAUPT Posts: 806 ✭✭✭
By the way, Jess, you are an extraordinarily talented proofreader. I'd never caught the difference in the period/colon after Wgt. on the two cards.

That is a great looking card Bob!

The only thing I see is on the back of the OPC version.....

The minor league total line at the bottom is missing the 3B total.

I'm French Canadian, but it'd be said the same way in French French. The corrections I suggested are in universal French. image

Thanks, again, Jess, I'll incorporate your suggestions. Thanks, also, to Steve for pointing out the missing 3B total.

    Hey Bob
Maybe 1 more --- there is a comma after Fullerton on the O-Pee-Chee back but not on the regular back
