Finally opened BBCE 1983 topps BB cello box

I opened my box of 1983 topps BB cellos from BBCE.

All packs were loosely wrapped. I thought cellos were tightly packed but I guess this is common for 1983.

All but 4-5 packs had this same mark from the wrapper on the end card. Does this mean these packs were resealed?

Anyway here are some of the cards:

3 maybe worth grading:

Johnny Bench solid 9, Ripken Hargrove shot at 10?
Most cards off centered some and a lot of print marks.

Thanks for sharing - I've not seen that on cello end cards before.

I have seen those markings on the '83 Topps back in 1983 so no I do not belaive these are reseals. If I remember correctly, some of the cellos from 1983 are loosly wrapped.
    Nice cards!

The marks seemed way too consistent for a resealed pack. but I never saw them before.

Busting the box was a lot of fun, will probably do another some time.

The 1984 Topps FB break we did a little while ago was enjoyable, almost bought one of those boxes.

    image Congrats on the cards!!!

Up until 1979 the cello packs were as tight as a brick. In 1980, they started sealing some packs looser, but you would see them tight as well. This continued in 1981 and 1982 for sure, but all my 1983 cello packs are loose like you describe yours. The wrapper marks on the cards may be a result of how they were stored, but I too have seen this as Bob (milbroco) pointed out. I doubt they were resealed.

Hope that helps. Any other unopened pack collectors please chime in if I missed something.

The 1984 Football is a blast to rip. I opened about 2 cases (1 cello, 1 wax) of that in 1985 as I got a few cases on closeout. You averaged 3 to 4 cards of Marino and Elway, not to mention all the other good stuff. Wish I still had them.......oh well

Over the last ten years, I've opened all types of packs of 1983 Topps and BY FAR my best hits were in vending boxes from BBCE. Loads of 9/10 worthy cards.

The cellos were the worst by far. Not sure if it was just the specific cello boxes I've owned or if there was something bad about the packaging that year.

I have nothing to add in terms of history but I doubt you would have pulled a Gwynn Rookie if they were resealed.

    Good luck with your sub.

    Did you get any Sandbergs?

    Thanks,

    No Sandbergs

  • I have one, but I'd never noticed how terrible that picture is on Gwynn's rookie. Obviously a spring training shot given the number, but man, what a terrible pic to use for the rookie card of one of the modern era's all time greats.

Not to worry I have seen that mark plenty of times from cellos I opened back in the 80's. Those marks can be found on cards from 82, 83, 84, 85, & 86. Could be other years as well but these I know for sure. I have boxes full of damaged cards from packs I opened in the 80's (miscuts, stains, gum, etc.). I guess I should get around to throwing them away. I must have 100 gum stained 1986 Topps Eric Davis cards image

Bummer. I bought come '83 grocery rack packs one of which had a Sandberg showing, as I wanted to be assured that I got one. That was ABSOLUTELY the only decent card in the packs!
2.5 is pretty much my speed.
  • there is really no reason to open and reseal 83 topps cellos/racks or any year for that matter of fact if you have the sequence for those years you can just pull the cellos with Boggs, Gwynn and Sandberg in them.

as far as the marks on the cards, I have also seen those marks , I think this may have been caused by temperature changes that the boxes have went through hot to cold to hot. sugar on the gum ect ect.

To keep the answer short many collectors keep track of the sequence of cards in a pack when a star card is found. Using this information you can cherrypick packs that have a very good chance of having a specific card inside. Lots of serious 1975 Topps collectors have this down perfectly. It has become a very common practice especially with rack packs since it is easier with so many cards showing. Also most people that have this info will not share it with others unless they get something pretty good in return.

I had my 1989 sequence down and could spot a Gregg Jefferies a mile away. I'm happy to share that info with any board members.

That is one thing but when the cost is $100 or more per pack people tend to share a little less. I am not saying you or me specifically just most people in general.

I opened a 6-box rack case in '87 and had the sequence down for about 25 different guys.
