Christy Matthewson 1914 card

Newbie here. I normally hang out on the coin boards.
A childhood friend had a dad who collected cards. He's thinking about selling, but knows not what he's doing. He wants to do a trial run with a spectacular 1914 Christy Matthewson card, panoramic shot of him in a pitching motion (I don't have a photo). The guy says it's pristine, save for a small missing corner.
I'd been trying to guide him carefully based on my coin knowledge, and recommended first getting it graded at PSA, then auctioning it through Heritage.
Do any of you have any more learned/better ideas for him?
Thanks!

I agree with your proposed strategy. In the meantime, if he wants to find out a ballpark of what anything is worth or what exactly he has, feel free to post pics here and we can try to help.
Always buying Bobby Cox inserts. PM me.
Also: would Heritage submit it for him, if he agreed to consign it to auction with them?
(I really wish I could get a scan of it from him, but I don't believe he has access to a scanner).
Thanks for your help!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
<< <i>At PSA, is that $250 fee the cheapest way for him to get it graded? (He's not in a hurry, time-wise).

An auction house should be able to guide him in determining if the best strategy is to grade or not to grade. Also, some auction houses have more grade-oriented clientele. Some have more raw-clientele.

The main draw for the 1914 E145-1 Mathewson is the pose.... it is not the same as the more common 1915 E145-2 card (portrait).
To me the pitching pose looks funny because it is drawn with the ball still deep in his hand when it should have been release by that time. (fake pitch
the 1914 are far far tougher in higher grade and are much scarcer overall compared to their 1915 counterparts. 1914 cards only came in boxes while 1915 cards came in boxes and also were available as a complete set from the compnay (thus making them far more plentiful and without the product stains).
Of all the players found in both sets the Mathewson is the only player that had the drawing pose changed (I guess they didnt like it either).
They sell for big crazy $$$, do a search and you will see. Id recommend SGC over PSA, but either is good for a common well known set like these as PSA will ID it correctly Im sure.
Post a pic when you can
