MLB Draft

I'm watching the MLB draft on MLB-TV. Don't bother changing channels if you're not already there. Its awful. Bunch of dudes you've never heard of and the draft room is almost empty. Only thing interesting is when the Blue Jays pick, you get to see Roberto Alomar try to read English off of the card they give him- He's slower than a 2nd grader, but he sure tries hard.

what a freekin day, people!
Sean Gilmartin of Florida State, chosen by the Atlanta Braves, was a pitcher/outfielder for Crespi High School in Encino, which happened to be the most notorious crosstown rival of my son's own high school ballteam, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and was a top pitcher for the team that defeated our kids twice in league ball the same year, 2008, which was the only year Notre Dame has ever won a Division title, which they accomplished at Dodger Stadium, while Crespi was surprisngly knocked out in the 2nd round of the playoffs.....congrats to Sean, it was a pleasure to watch him succeed, except against us.
Trevor Bauer of UCLA, the 3RD overall pick of the D-Backs, was a very notable athlete out here during his high school career, and was the kid on the mound in a Fall League game against our guys in late 2007, with the score tied at 3 in the 11th inning and two outs, he threw a nothing fastball over the middle of the plate and a tall, gangly benchwarmer planted that cheese in the bushes behind the left centerfield fence to end the game, which was going to be called anyways by coaches agreement, regardless of the score.....the kid who homered was my son and I'm certain Bauer threw him a room service pitch, but he still had to hit it.
it's a moment I'll never forget, because so many of us already knew just how good Bauer was even then, before he set foot on the UCLA campus the following spring as an early arrival.
but the best and most surprising, amazing, shocking, HOLY $#1T MOMENT?????
Chris Reed of Stanford, by way of Cleveland High School and the very same Pony League fields where our sons made us so proud, and those days we all sat there and watched them and tried as we might to resist the urge, we couldn't help but think that with so many good kids playing the game out here in the SFV, somebody had to make it to the show......but, to get drafted by the LOS ANGELES DODGERS??!?!?!?!!?? OMG!!
Chris, we salute you.....it was because of your Dad, that my kid got to go play with All-Stars at Cooperstown, because he asked your coach to give my kid a shot, just to let him be a part of this group of kids who play this game so well and one of them was you......we knew you had it man, FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICK!!
congrats to the local boys who still have a long way to go, but have shown us what it truly takes to start out as just a little kid with handful of equipment and a dream.
<< <i>it is quite gratifying for me as a fan of youth, high school, and ultimately college sports to have witnessed the rise of not one, not two, but THREE local kids who were chosen in the First Round.

Itzagonner- Cool that you got to see so many local kids drafted that you watched play with your son. Word around town was that the Braves were going to select Vandy pitcher Grayson Garvin if he was still available. When he was there and they took Gilmartin instead, several of us were a little surprised. Hope he turns out to be a winner.
