What prospects should I be looking for in modern baseball packs?-UPDATE 6/16...here's who I got!

I am thinking about buying some modern card packs and wondered who the "hot" prospect names are right now? Obviously, I know Harper is the big one. Who else? Any help is appreciated! imageimage

Gregg Jefferies -- I still have more than 100 1989 topps and would search for packs with him on the top or bottom.

    +1
I remember seeing the owner of a flea market open a briefcase in front of me full of '88 Fleer Jefferies in top loaders rubber-banded together. I bought two from him for $25 apiece and wished I had cash to buy more. Incidentally, I recall that same flea market had '82 TT sets for $20 apiece.
  • MY Harpers base cards that are selling for $8 to $20, are selling for $100 plus in PSA 10...

Who says their is no money in modern?

If they are hot grade em!

They were top notch prospects, but no Von Hayes. image

Thanks for the replies...which is the better way to go individual packs or boxes(if I am buying from a retailer like Target?)

And by the way....if I happen to get a Todd Van Poppel card, Gumby has first dibs people! image
  • The best way is to buy Hobby boxes. I wouldn't buy from Wal Mart or Target.

eBay will have best competitive rate online.

Diamond Cards Online has great prices, call Shawn Hastings if they have something you want, and tell him I sent you. He should give you a great price. He always gives me the lowest price from Blowout, DaCardworld, and EBay.

    Good luck!!

If you get a Todd Van Poppel, you'll have some serious problems. image

Ok so I bought a couple of packs of the 2011 Bowman....here is a list of the players I have never heard of! image

    Kyle Russell- BCP 105
    JD Martinez-BCP 92
    Adrian Salcedo-BCP 58
    Paul Goldschmidt- BP 99
    Jurickson Profar- BP 82
    Wagner Mateo- BP 88
    Jonathan Scoop- BP25
    Anthony Rizzo-TC20

Also....I bought some 2010 Bowman Platinum and got these:

    Desmond Jennings- PP2
    George Springer- PP48
    Jeremy Hellickson- PP3
    JD Martinez- PP23 Refractor
    Sonny Gray- PP37 Refractor
    Austin Romine- PP119 Refrator
    Billy Butler- 59....090/999

I probably didn't get anything special, but it was fun to rip a few packs during my lunch today!!! image

Oh and I forgot to mention the first card on the top of one of the 2011 Bowman packs was A Rod base card #170 so I figured I wouldn't get much else in that pack!!! image

You should go to http://www.baseball-reference.com/ and look some of these guys up. Baseball-Reference has both major and minor league stats. Also, type the names into ebay and see what the cards are popular right now.

Anyways, the kid Paul Goldschmidt has been displaying some serious power over the past few seasons.

$25 each? Wasn't that way over book price? I didn't think it was ever worth more than $10.

Not sure what book was but here in NY it was easily a $20 card. Gary Walter baseball cards sold out and he sells a lot of single cards. I made the mistake of trading a nice '68 Seaver for a bunch of Jefferies.
