34 Years and Still Waiting....and...Waiting

Sunday June 5th 1977 was the last time I lived in a city that won a Championship out of the big four sports. That was a absolute magical time watching one of the great teams win it's one and only

championship. I remember it like it was yesterday. Living in Seattle it may be another 34 'till the next one. What's the longest drought you had to go through? Take care. Doug

I was sitting at my kitchen table reading Peter Benchley's "The Deep" while watching that final game on the family's black & white. I remember thinking it was pretty neat, but wasn't old enough to have the chest-thumping type of pride that normally goes with your favorite team winning a championship. I still think back on that team with a lot of fond memories. My favorite players were Lionel Hollins and Maurice Lucas.

Longest for me was 12 years - from 1972 when I was born to 1984 when the Tigers won the World Series. I've long since stopped living in Michigan but am still a Detroit fan through and through. I've been real fortunate to have seen championships in 3 of the 4 major sports in my home area, plus college football (U of M), college basketball (U of M), multiple college hockey (U of M), etc. Haven't had to wait too long between championships since that first one.

Stars in 1999 and I was a freshman in highschool and we were on Vacation. We lived in south Texas when the Cowboys won (not really my team). Got to see a World Series last year, in the middle of an NBA Finals right now that I expect to end like the World Series did....

I went to college at Texas Tech....so nothing there. 2008 was great, from the hype, to the Crabtree catch, to the #2 ranking, to the bye week before the OU game with all the hype. But I was at the game in Norman. My backside is still sore from the kicking I got.

No team I have directly rooted for has ever won a title. Ever. I just want one from the Rangers and from Tech football. Hoping that 2011 is the year..... We'll see.

I grew up in New Orleans. Went to my first Saints game in the late 60's. Started following the Hurricanes in hockey when I moved to Carolina in 2000. Got a Stanley Cup fairly quickly, but the Saints made me suffer for over 40 years for the Super Bowl.

  • Before the SF Giants won, I was in a 16 year drought since the Niners last won in 1994. I'm also a Knicks fan, and, well, it's been nearly a lifetime for me on that one.

Boston's been pretty fortunate recently but the Celtics '86 title to the Patriots in '01 was a 15 year one. I've never seen a Bruins title (and it doesn't look hopeful this year either).

I love Breaks of the Game about that era of the Blazers. Top 3-4 sports book ever.

I was born in 1961, so I have seen the Flyers win 2 Stanley Cups, the 76'ers win 1 championship, the Phillies 2 World Series and the Eagles.........who cares.

  • Born in 1971, and I've lived in the Twin Cities my whole life.....

    Twins: 1987, 1991
    Vikings, Timberwolves, North Stars/Wild: never

So the current drought is 20 years, and will likely go for a LONG time before it ends. The Twins are regressing, the Vikings are not close, and the Wolves likely will never even make the playoffs again while still located in this city. I do not follow hockey but it appears the Wild are nowhere near competing for a championship either, from what I hear.

    Morning,

My Oakland Raiders have made me wait for almost 30 years now, last Superbowl 1983! Live in Colorado and root for every team Except The Donkeys! As with most Raider fans we're just waiting for Al to die so we can have a team!!! Rockies are looking like crap, the Avalanche are years away from competeing. Nuggets....who cares!!

Growing up in the 1970s in Oakland, CA I didn't realize at the time how fortunate I was that the home town teams were so good back then. A's, Raiders, and Warriors all won at least one championship in the 1970s. Then there was the Seals, but hey they never had a chance. So now with the A's last having won in 1989 I feel like it's been a long time but probably just spoiled by my early success.

The Warriors are a hopeless case, the Raiders will not get better until Al Davis is out of the picture, and the A's play a very uninteresting brand of baseball topped by the fact that any player who rises above his "value" will soon get traded away.

Now frustrated by the SJ Sharks, but maybe next year...
  • Well, I'm a Cubs fan. So I'm going on my 2nd century.

being born and raised in L.A. gives me a slightly twisted impression of civic pride, what with the Dodgers and their recent antics, NFL teams coming and going, NHL teams which are consistently seeking new identities, and of course our dear, beloved, psychotic, dysfunctional title-sucking Lakers......over the years, i've developed a fondness for Chicago Bears football and yes, ugh!! Cubs baseball and i remain in limbo with the rest of the REAL sufferers, the devoted North Siders, i say a prayer for you guys every night. image

beyond the blab though Piggies, i honestly assumed you were just be-yatching and moaning about your most recent PSA submission. imageimage

I was 11 going on 12 when the Bucs won the Super Bowl and 13 when the Lightning won the Cup. I was too young to even know what was going on when the Braves won the series, and same goes for Shaq and Penny's Magic team that made it to the finals. My college's football team has only been around for about 15 years (although I've only been following them for about 3-4 years now) and hasn't ever won anything too meaningful but hopefully that will change. I've seen the Rays and Magic get pretty close, but no cigar. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm waiting for a while before one of those teams wins it all.

Another Cleveland guy here! The Browns won it all in 1964 and I was born in 1966. Alot of close calls with the Browns in the Championship game several times only to meet Mr. Elway, Jeremiah Castille, and all the other dream snatchers. The Indians were close a few times even down to just a couple outs in game 7 when Jose Mesa played villian. Even the Cavs had a nice stretch in the late 80's with Price, Dougherty, and Nance until a guy named Jordan made a lucky shot over Craig Ehlo. Then the 2nd round of hope came with leBron and we all know how that panned out. Hockey...not so much as the Barons left us for Minnesota so it's been a long 47 years without a taste of that championship champaign. I prefer to just think of the bubby just aging to make it that much sweeter when we finally get to crack it open!

    From Miami here...

Nothing from the Dolphins in my lifetime, just a SB appearance.

The Marlins won the WS twice ('97 and '03).

The Heat will have two in another week.

The Panthers went to a Stanley Cup.
