Heritage Auctions Wins Anyone?

ZoharZohar Posts: 6,678 ✭✭✭✭✭
On the Taler front it got very competitive. I am seeing hightened demand and perhaps a very weak dollar being a disadvantage for us local bidders.

Anyone have any wins to post? I will post mine soon.

I watched a lot of the earlier South and Central American stuff and it seemed to get very good prices. Of the coins I was after I thought they went reasonbly, paid a bit more than I wanted for the Geo. V VIP halfpenny, but there's not many of them about to buy. I had also thought about the proof Vicky 1/2 d's, but both had issues so I did not bid and they went really cheap.

1745 Lima Shilling, MS63. The Brits loved to brag a little back in the day, after Admiral Anson aboard the "Centurion" whipped a Spanish Galleon and sacked the port in Lima they marked the gold and silver issues made with the metal with the Lima mark. This one I needed for my Shilling type set.

    image

1806 Farthing in 66 BN, I needed one of these for my Geo. III type set.

    image

1860 Toothed Border Penny in 65RB, note the huge die crack running across the reverse. This one goes in my Vicky penny set.

    image

1935 VIP Proof 66 BN Halfpenny, Freeman 425, R18, 6-15 known, this one fits in my "gosh isn't that a cool coin set".

Amazing talers but prices quickly ran out of my league.

Three NGC MS65 pieces, all at relatively good prices: 1850 farthing, 1864 and 1866 shillings.

    I won three coins.

Jeff - I really like that 1745 Lima shilling - wow! I think you had a good day.
  • 7Jaguars7Jaguars Posts: 7,750 ✭✭✭✭✭
Go Jeff! Wybrit, I think that the 1850 farthing went very cheap and that was a good buy; might have given a bit of comp but mine is OK.
I have a few bids out for today but was not a contender.

I always wanted to get an earlier Salzburg Taler in the higher grade. These were crudely struck compared to the later issues.

I stretched and overpaid for this one in spite of the few plachett flaws, given the sharp details, strike, and well above average overall presentation.

Great looking coins everyone. If I happen to be the winner on two pending lots, I will be in so much trouble with my wife.

Look at estimate vs. bidding on this one

I was able to win this 4R in NGC XF45. I chased another, but the bidding is fierce for Central and South America.

    image

Edited to add the Heritage lot description:
Estado 4 Reales 1851-G, KM20a, XF45 NGC, much original color on this well centered and nearly fully stuck example.
The slight flan crudeness is appealing and it is unlikely this example entered circulation. Ex-Amon Carter collection (1988).
From The Dana Roberts Collection. Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $40 in VF, $175 in EF.

Amazing prices all around - blown away on a few minors I was chasing like a cool Krakow 5 Grozsy and a Curacao Reaal both went for double my estimates.

Another amazing price noted was a rare date 1934 semi-key 20 Mil Palestine in Anacs MS64 (that should have no problem crossing) fetch an astounding $3700 almost triple what it sold for a few years ago. I believe that may actually be the highest price ever paid for a Palestine mandate coin.

    Nice wins everyone image

    Heritage's lot description:

How about the 1853 3d at 1550 with juice? Do you all feel that was a currency 3d or a Maundy? I can not make a decision on this one...Sharp strike on the obv. seems a negative and the rev. sharper as would be expected. Edge teeth about average, edges also.

If currency, RARE, but who can rightly tell, not sure if NGC grading does any favour as I have seen them grade Maundy 3d as currency before.

I was hoping someone here would buy it so we would know, I really can't tell those very well. It certainly looked well struck enough to be a Maundy, and I don't trust the TPG's to get it right more than 50% of the time.

Didn't Bruce Lorich catalog the British stuff in the sale? I would think he would be able to tell.
  • ZoharZohar Posts: 6,678 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bid on this one as an impulse purchase (just seemed like a good price for the low mintage/quality). I now ask myself why did I do it... in any case, will move it at my cost to someone looking to get one.

  • WWWWWW Posts: 2,609 ✭✭✭
Z, I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one. Even though I have been holding out for an AU58 and perhaps even higher, I bought this CAR 8R on an impulse.

Have to agree that the 1853 3d was a jaw dropper. Couldn't tell if it was maundy. Also, the South African George V MS 66 black farthings I drooled over went for over $1,000 apiece before BP. Wow.

I won a couple of insignificant pieces in the Monday marathon - an 1884 6d and 1901 raw shilling. The latter was a bit weird in that I thought I missed it completely.

While trying to bid on the '01 shilling, it turned out that Heritage thought I was bidding on the next lot, which I didn't want. Fortunately, I was substantially outbid by the end.

"Monday marathon" Good one, wybrit. An apt description. Especially if you were waiting on Switzerland or Uruguay.

I've wanted a nice example for awhile, but didn't want to spend a lot on it. I was pleased to pick this one up. Some great pieces here, I love the South American coinage.

Great pick-ups, everyone! Andy, that 2 Reales is a really neat error. Especially for $100.
  • 7Jaguars7Jaguars Posts: 7,750 ✭✭✭✭✭
Not that many care, but I have looked at the 1853 under very high magnification (well the Heritage Images) and think I agree with this being non-Maundy. I ordinarily will reject as currency especially these 1850s issues when the fields are prooflike with a sharp well struck Vicky which is indeed the case with this coin.

The obverse can many times be telltale as many times obverse dies were used for multiple years so a lot of die wear/erosion seen. On the other hand the reverses are dated and so are prepared each year anew, therefor many times likely to not show as much wear or damage.

What is interesting on this coin, which is known to have a low reported mintage, is that it has somewhat sharp striking of devices but that the edges and border teeth have characteristics of currency (rounded and worn border which speak more to planchet prep prior to striking rather than wear, and the teeth which are rather uneven in application and crude). Lettering crudeness and errors, and die cracks even large in size can also be seen on Maundy pieces....Well, I will not run on here so sorry.

I won this one. The coin is extremely rare in UNC. PCGS has graded one specimen in VF and that's it. (Can someone please check the NGC census for me?)

looks like the highest graded t/d is a lone au53 in BN image

I did manage to pick up a bird of paradise 10 Pfennig from German New Guinea that is in a PCGS MS64RB holder, later in the internet only.
