Dissapointed with my flea market "treasure". 4 Reale and a Thaler, both 1700's

I offered the seller $50 for both and he accepted pretty quick. To me, even with the holes, these were worth it due to the age. But after doing some looking, it looks like I didn't do as good as I hoped.

I know there are a load of Taresa Thaler replica or restrikes out there...but I thought a 1700's thaler would be worth more even with a hole.

Does anyone have any info before I throw these in the the junk silver?

  • maybe you didn't get a GREAT deal, but i definitely think you made a fair deal at $25 each-- just the price of silver today alone makes it fair. Then you got some cool history, particularly with the 1777 4 reale. This is a large revolutionary war period silver coin that may well have circulated in the Colonies during that war--- not only that, the 4 reale is easily the scarcest denomination of silver Spanish Colonial coins. As for the Thaler, that's a lot more of an unknown. They were all dated 1780 but were minted into modern times with that date, so no telling what year yours was struck. It certainly LOOKS like it dates back to the 1700s though by the wear and toning. So thats very possibly TWO (definitely one) large silver coins dating back to the 1700s at $25 each......less than what dirty-common and CIRCULATED 1921 Morgan Dollars are going for on ebay right now.

You did get them for around melt, assuming they are genuine. A hole is never a good thing in a coin.

I didn't realize they were all dated 1780. Thanks for responding.

There is a definitive reference on the MT Thalers somewhere - but my memory is not what it used to be. They have been more or less continuously struck since the 1780s, at various mints, not just Vienna. I agree that yours looks to be of an older vintage.

I have a tough time getting past the holes also. As collector pieces, I would say you bought some silver. These coins should be allowed to die an honorable death and go to that great smelter in the sky. They have done their duty, and more.

I dunno, they have cool factor in my book image

    Here's Krause on your purchases:

Mexico 4R, KM 97.2 - 0.3931 ASW - $70/VG - so that should give you a slight premium over melt value, maybe

The MTT would be 0.7515 ASW and the guide to restrikes is here. Personally, I've never had the patience to stare at all that image
