CC Special in 1982 and 83 Wrestling All Stars.....

Raw Andre

Graded BGS 9,
This sub was a super fast turn around. I had a terrible thing happen to me about a month ago where I noticed the upper right hand corner lifting of my Andre BGS 9 that I had planned to try and cross over. I showed it to a very respected dealer I corespond with and he agreed it was indeed lifting. I said the heck with it and cracked it out. I put it in a card saver in some books and the first photo is the scan. The surface around the hair is not great but what I think got me was a small surface problem only noticeable tilted in the light. It was not a surface wrinkle but something my eye caught. I was not sure what it would grade but trust me this is the nicest PSA 7 you will find.
There are severall crack outs in this sub from BGS and three came in lower then where they were. I am working hard to get out of as many BGS holders as I can as many are not graded as strict as PSA. The PSA 9 Jim Brunzell was a stunning BGS 9 with three BGS 9.5 grades. The Rickey Steamboat was a BGS 8.5, one of the Jim Duggan was and so was Rocky Johnson The Rock's father.
The home run in this sub is the PSA 9 Bobby Heenan, this is a Pop 1 and will never expand much. I have a bunch more raw that are not even worthy of a PSA 7. This was the last major star card I needed for 82B in a PSA 9 or higher. I am extremely excited about this one. I would have paid a lot of money for this card!
Other major hits are the PSA 9 Wahoo Mcdanial and Ivan Koloff, both are super tough cards and are Pop 2's and will fit perfect in my second 82A Set. I own the other one's.
The Jerry Lawler PSA 9 is a nice score along with the Terry Funk, Tommy Rich, Bob Backlund, and Pat Patterson.
What can be taken away from this sub is how difficult a Harley Race, The Chrusher, Mil Mascaras, Matt Borne and Austin Idol are. The last two may never surace in a PSA 9 and certainly no belief of any 10's. They will be the 84 Donruss equivalent of Vance Law if more people ever take this set seriously. I asked for no qualifiers so I am sure this kept me from getting some PSA 9 OC and so forth.
It really shocked me that my 50 card special beat my registry sub. At the last second I pulled the only non Wrestling All Stars card in fear that it is what makes your subs take longer. Threw in a Kerry Von Erich at the last second and it got a PSA 7. His card is the one to watch in the set as it is going to move into the top five in price and may have already.

Tommy Rich, very tough card due to centering and print dots
Bob Backlund, no PSA 10's due to white print dots and centering
Very nice Terry Funk
Kerry Von Erich is the ultra rookie card of this set, breaking out big to the upside
The BGS 9 Andre The Giant I had to crack out, a PSA 7
Great card of a man who is so important to wrestling
One of the toughest cards, a nearly BGS 9.5 crack out, only the surface line near the title keeps this from being a 10, razor sharp
The easiest PSA 9 of all, centering generally strong and the green holds up better for some reason then the other color
This is a BGS 8.5 crackout, PSA is much more strict on these cards in general, razor sharp but surface problem at the bottom with the black smudge
This is a 1/1 and there will be very few ever of these. Super tough card!!! The highlight of my sub!!
Such a tough card, major print and centering issues plauge this card and this is a blazer
The most off center card in the 82A, a centered blazer is not even real!!! Awesome card!!!
The white cards are so tough to judge and the blue from the cards above on the sheet are an issue, major star and a classic photo, The KIng at Wrestlemania!!!!
This is the first of the Chrusher cards I am posting, the description in the second.
This is the crown jewel other then the Andre in Mint condition. This card has a Pop 1 and is just going to be so hard to track down. The back card in all of the sets I have opened and known of. The printing issues are huge and corners are always an issue. Both are very strong cards but centering kills them. This is the most saught after card for me in PSA 9.
Great card of Dory Funk
These are my recent additions from the CC special. Still waiting for the big one from the set registry special.
I have been working very hard on this and there is still more to go. Some of the cards will never be 10's and a few in 83 may never be 9's. But still enjoy chasing the best cards I can find.
The 82A was a more popular set then 82B. It is more common but there are cards in it that have bad centering almost all of the time. The 82B on the other hand has a lot of cards never found in Gem Mint condition.
This set came from a magazine that was not on the news stand. It was mail order only and the cards were the same. There was less then 50,000 who bought the magazine so the estimates of 2000 to 4000 sets I believe are real. There are some wild predictions of 100 sets but I am not in that camp.
The cards only came in sealed bricks of cards and there are no packs. Every sealed set I have ever bought had cards with damaged corners. The only hope for perfect cards are a sealed set and in the center of the brick.
Mike
Thanks,

stupid print dots
At this point I am looking for a few specific cards. I will still continue to expand my holdings but at only prices I feel have some margin in them. If you look at completed auctions I am not winning any lately.
A perfect sealed set should yield a few really nice cards. The primary reason I think these cards are special is you can not find them sealed easily and not many still exist in total. You can find lots of sports cards sealed and as the wax or sets get busted the pop reports only rise. The pop reports on these are normalizing and the percentage of 10's is falling as it should. A Gem Mint card from any of these sets is real tough. There are a few that are more common but trust me you have to have a blazer. The Wahoo and Ivan Kollof I thought had a shot at being a 10 for sure and no such luck on this sub.
This was my last batch of raw cards that were strong. I have no more in my raw collection that will grade a 9 or 10.
The break up value of a NM-MT raw set for 82 A is at least $900, the break up value for a 82B in NM-MT is probably close to $450. Just as raw NM-MT cards can sell for more then graded NM-MT the same would hold true here.
This market is still just developing and is going to take some time to show its true colors. I believe as more people realize how cool these cards are and how hard they are to find in awesome condition the prices will reflect that.
In that time I have never seen gem mint cards of almost any card in the set. Mint cards are very rare.
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
I know Beckett is garbage but people still look at it. The guide has prices in NM-MT and has Andre at $100 in the high column and Hogan at $250. You can not touch these cards for those prices. The last Andre in PSA 8 NM-MT sold for $445.
The card they have the must undervalued is the Kerry Von Erich at $10. A true NM-MT copy would easily sell for $50 or more. The last raw copy in auction fetched $51 and was EX-MT at best.
What I find so strange about the Beckett coverage is that most cards do not sell for even close to the high book column and yet almost every card in the set sells for more. You would think they would be thrilled to be raising the prices in the guide yet they are asleep at the wheel.

These were all BGS crossovers and I only hit 40%. I was hoping for 60% and was suprised on a few of these. The Jimmy Valient is so nice I really thought it would cross over to a PSA 10. The Dory Funk Jr. PSA 10 is a great score and I am very pleased about the Bob Roop as that card is so tough. It is a pop 1 and will not have many ever. I was able to upgrade 3 cards which was nice and was really hoping the Andre The Giant BGS 8.5 would cross over to a PSA 8 but n such luck. The Kerry Von Erich BGS 9.5x4 was no suprise as the top to bottom centering I was thinking would hold it back.
Overall I can't complain as The Dory Funk Jr. pop 1/1 pays for the sub easily.
I will post scans when I get them in the mail.
Thanks,
Paul
In the 1970's there are two sets of paper cards that came out. One in 1973 and the other in 1978.
The link I posted will take you to a site where the paper card was for sale. The magazine is very rare and they sometimes can sell for a nice amount. The 1973 set features the card and features the first Andre The Giant card. These are litteraly paper cards with a bio on the rear and could be cut out if desired. I personaly do not own the 1973 magazine but do indeed own the 1978 magazine and the 1981 magazine with the first Hulk Hogan card.
I will say I personaly think the paper cards are interesting but am much more interested in real cards and the 1982 and 1983 Wrestling All Stars are the first true wrestling cards since 1955 when the second Parkhurst wrestling set came out in Canada.
Haystacks Calhoun was a beast of a man!!!
The three sets mentioned in this thread have a total of 108 cards and a large number of the guys who were popular in the late 70's and 80's are in the sets.
He was a very big man, They had a special chair for him that had the left arm support removed. He drove a conversion van with some heavy duty suspension on it. I never thought to get his autograph, but he was very friendly and seemed like a real nice person.
Paul
This is the Dory Funk Jr. that crossed over
Jimmy Valiant that did not, most likely going to resub and just go for a PSA 9 for my set
Kerry Von Erich that did not cross, have this in a PSA 9 so not going to cross it over just yet in a lower grade
Once I get these in a few days I will be uploading them to my sets in the Registry and will post more scans.
Super tough card, has printing problems on the photo that cause a PD qualifier on most cards,
This is such a tough card to find in a NM grade, not many 9's will ever surface, major centering and corner problems being so close to the front of the deck
Got to love Bruiser Brody!!! One of the true wild men of the sport, was stabbed to death in Puerto Rico in 1988, a real loss
This guy was hot in NY with his Italien persona in the early 80's, tough card and really a set filler for most
A really great looking card and a home run for me
