Watching Stacks/Bowers...

Sale seems to be going ok, most items going within estimate, some areas seemed to go cheap. Then they got to the Chinese Dollars, most of the pieces they had estimated in the low hundreds are going for over $1k.

And I'm pretty happy, got the 3 lots I wanted for under my max bids. I should have bid on some of the Guinea patterns that came up earlier, and went cheap, but didn't know how much I would have to spend on the halfpennies so held back.

1774 BN Francfurt Gold 1 Kreuzer Pattern KM-Pn 58 in MS62, I have one of the coppers and just love the tiny little engraved city view:

1788 P968 Hallfpenny (copper-late Soho) in PF65BN, this one listed as VR by Peck and is a pop 1/0 at NGC:

I left one bid and was not there for the live session. In logging in to their site now (VERY slow) I can not determine if I won or not - how does one know the results. This website needs some work.

Beautiful coins guys! Congrats on your newps.

Contrarily to most members here, I'm no fan of city view talers. But this little Frankfurt gold Kreuzer stole my heart! image

Those are very nice Agentjim and Zohar, glad to see some other people were able to pick up a few. I'm afraid if you were bidding on Chiinese you had to go big though, I feel your pain ormandh.

On the up side, I sold my 1912 B Trade Dollar last night, now I have extra money for the CICF auction. It sold for almost the same price as the three pieces I purchased today so I'm feeling pretty good about that. If I had any Chinese they would be going up also, I've decided that coins that aren't part of my core collection get sold if the market goes crazy for them. It's not like you can't replace a trade dollar any day you want.

Sweet looking coins. I only came away with one. Their antiquated website, low power bandwidth and poor BGP routing is killing Stacks/Bowers.

Edited to add: The site portrays very nice images. Much better than Heritage's.

Bill - I couldn't agree with you more regarding website. Slow, difficult to navigate. Heritage kicks butt on the technology front. Stack's doesnt seem to want to evolve with the times.

Same here. I was interested in the 1905 shilling, but did not bid, nor will I lose sleep about it because the site is so low tech.

The site itself does suck, but the live bidding seemed to work as fast as HA's. I just don't know how a company could get a web site so wrong.

Is there a list of prices anywhere?

I concur that the site is slow and cumbersome. I was going to bid live, but when I typed in details to register I didn't get any signs of life from their end, so had to assume that it hadn't worked. In the end I emailed some bids to the contact address, but haven't a clue if that is the right one or not either as they didn't acknowledge them. In the end I took a fatalistic approach and did some decorating instead. What willl be, will be.

Jeff. The P968. I could do with an opinion on whether it is actually copper or bronzed. Myself and one other collector who I'm in contact with follow Soho patterns, but neither of us have seen a P968 that we don't consider to have been a bronzed P967.

Here's how you can see prices realized now. Click on Auction link (main page). Click on live bidding. On the right side of page close to the bottom is RECENT NEWS. Click on the article about the March 2011 Baltimore Auctions link (the first one).
Go down to the auction your're interested in (I'm guessing Session 6). Click on any "view" link. At the top you'll see "Back to Auction lot listing" with a little green arrow. Now you can access the entire auction.

What irritates me is the "secure" pop up every time you change a page.

I'll let you know after it arrives Rob, I've got a 967 in bronzed copper to compare it to, although it is still very difficult sometimes when they are toned.

Got my confirmation e-mail. I won it. Now they say 14 days delivery schedule upon payment.
