<< <i>So a retail store could send back unsold boxes to Topps at the end of the year? The somehow they entered the collectible marketplace through Topps? >>

Yes they were retuns to Topps. And yes you wre able to buy them from Topps. I have mentioned on a few threads before that my friend had an account with Topps and I went with him on several occasions to buy these closeouts. I remember him buying 1984 Topps Football and 1984 Topps hockey at $37.00 per CASE. One time we loaded about 150 cases of the 1984 Football into his truck. There was both wax and cello. My friend allowed me to purchase a few cases at those prices ($37.00 per case) for helping him. Those were the good old days.......... Bob

I remember seeing those X boxes in candy stores in Brooklyn. I remember going in and out of all the stores on Kings Highway in 1985 and finding packs as old as 1982. They sold them for 10 cents less per pack.

Ah, Kings Highway -- I lived near 86th Street and Bay Parkway
That is also the reason I thought it was.. but...if that is the correct reason, then how can a sealed case be opened, with boxes marked with the crossout ?
Topps did that too. Easier to sell the cases so they'd repackage cases with the X boxes and offer them up at discounts. The X boxes always seemed to be loaded with the cards you wanted. I know I opened a box of 86 football and ended up with 6 Rice and 7 Youngs...
I have 2 1987 Topps Football boxes I bought in 1988 from a Dealer in N.J. .. He had 3 or 4 cases and sold them to me for around $7.00 each. They have a single very thick black line horizontally across the front of the box. This same guy had cases of hockey that were marked the same way.
