Scientific and Technological Inventions and Discoveries of Ancient China

Hi All!

Are these sets considered the new King of modern Chinese coin sets?

    Never heard of 'em.

But then, there's a whole lotta stuff I've never heard of.

  • Are you referring to the 2000 Yuan proof gold coins of 1992?
  • Scientific and Technological Inventions and Discoveries of Ancient China is a major set but it has plenty of competition. The popular Lunar and Unicorn/Kirin coins are contenders. The 400+ Panda coins are in the running. Among rarities the Romance of Three Kingdoms would be hard to beat. Frankly, Chinese numismatics is so hot right now and has so many rare coins, I'm not sure if a king exists.

    Peter,

If I were to look for an "undervalued" set out of all the ones we have talked about, which one would it be?

  • My own specialty of Panda coins has quite a few good prospects. For many years most Pandas were exported from China so Chinese collectors didn't develop a strong affinity to them. Now more Pandas are being sold in China and demand is rising. It has become quite difficult to find many coins but prices haven't adjusted upwards yet in many instances. I was recommending the silver Munich Coin Show Medals until they suddenly tripled between December and January. There are some BU Panda coins with very small populations that can still be bought cheaply, a situation that I don't think will continue indefinitely, so that's what I favor.

    1992 Plat Proof Set (5 x 1oz coins) - KM 410, 411, 412, 413, 414. Goldberg Auction February 2011 Lots 3437-3441. Total for all 5 lots was 176k. The corresponding gold set (KM 415 - 419) went for 63k.

Before Goldberg, Hong Kong Champion Auction - the same Plat set went for 184k...........

  • The 1992 silver 200 Yuan Lunar has auctioned for more than $100,000 all by itself and the gold version of the same design passed $160,000. Competition for the top spot in Chinese numismatics is intense. The 1991 10,000 Yuan gold Panda (5 kg gold) brought more than $1,000,000 at auction last year.
