hot packs and pack searching

Once again, I want to preface this with I am new to the boards as of a couple weeks ago, so forgive me if I am re-hashing a topic that has been discussed a million times over. I did a search for hot and packs and found 0 hits, so I'm not sure if it hasn't been discussed in a while, or if I did something wrong with my search. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have pulled memorabilia cards or auto's, etc. from individual packs that you would pick up at Wal Mart or Target ? When I am shopping I often pick up a few packs here and there with my son, and never seem to land any of these cards, unless I buy a sealed box. Then I see these "Hot Pack" listings on ebay and it is disheartening to see that people can search and find these packs, and cherry pick them. So, if people go and search through the boxes at the local stores, would you guys suggest not buying packs, and just waiting until you can afford to buy a whole box, or are there still good cards that you pull from packs, like the good old days. Thanks for your help.

I know some guys like the retail blaster boxes but if you are going to spend the dough, buy hobby boxes from a respected seller. Your odds will go up significantly.
  • very very disheartening,,, theres all kinds of tricks out there to gain the upper hand, i know of one way this is being done and its all legit, buy it, cherry pick it, send it back as ,not as described,, heck even call it a gamble, and have everyone call you "holier than thow" by everyone, good advice buy sealed boxes, have fun with your kid, if your buying for one of these so called hits then swing away,, btw,, welcome to the boards,, bj

  • Some people search packs in stores, they can also buy blasters with a guaranteed jersey and figure out the pack. Of course, some seal up packs so that's always a risk. I say buy blasters if you have to buy retail or look for packs that hits are harder to find like refractors (and watch for people who open packs to see the cards inside and leave them that way.

if you see a pack searcher, it is common to punch them in the face and take their searched packs

Unfortunately, virtually ALL loose packs at your local Wal-Mart, Target, etc have been searched. The trick is not that hard and in some cases downright easy. In my opinion, NEVER buy loose packs at those places. Blasters are OK, but usually the "guaranteed" jersey is of a no-name player. I realize hobby boxes are a little more expensive, but if you enjoy opening packs and getting the "hits", you are better off saving up and getting one of those instead of a couple of blasters. I would avoid ebay when buying the hobby boxes as there are unscrupulous box searchers there as well.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

I've gotten a few hits from packs at Shopko & Wal-Mart before but not many. I unintentionally searched once while going through one of those "$1.99' clearance bins of packs (where they have all different brands/types). Noticed a pack of Atomic football that was about twice as thick as the rest so I bought it. Got a beautiful 3-color patch in that pack and have been collecting the patches ever since. Another time I get a Paul Molitor autograph from Topps Fan Favorites.

Really though, your best bet is to buy sealed boxes, particularly hobby.

cue cell phone pic of that enormous guy(with crack sticking out of sweat pants) pack searching in the middle of a Wal mart...
  • Stay away from single packs at retail. Blasters are the best way to buy at retail. Enjoy the hobby!
