1683 3 pence question...
I picked this coin up in a collection I purchased a while back and I really don't collect old world coins. So I was hoping someone on this forum could help me out with the grade and value of this piece as I am going to sell it. Thanks for any help.....Joe

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

However, I did come across THIS site with recent valuations, but they are listed in pounds instead of dollars. Not sure how accurate this list is... Anyone?
I have the 2006 edition of Spink's, and it lists this one at 20 pounds for a VF grade and 85 pounds for EF.
But I am at work for the moment, and my 17th century Krause is at home.
There is also a 1683/2 overdate listed which has the same prices in VG-F and goes $75 VF $225 XF.
Don't ask me how realistic Krause prices are vis-a-vis Spink.
I would call that a Fine by American standards, I reckon. Twelve bucks for it in this grade seems a little bit low, though. I would cheerfully pay full book price for that, and I would imagine many people would pay more. The dark toning actually "works"- I think it looks pretty handsome for a low- to mid-grade coin.
Maybe it's the large pics, but I think it grades much better than fine, I'd say a VF minimum, maybe better. The surface markings are adjustment marks or a planchet defect, right? YorkCoins has a much lower grade example listed for $50 on VCoins right now. I'd agree with JamesMurray that it should fetch at least $75. Scale down the picture to a more reasonable size and give it a gander, it's really a nice example.
The closest i have to it condition wise is a William & Mary 4d in UNC dated 1689 and that was the most expensive of my small silver by quite a bit.I was well into three figures for it.
One thing that coin is not is a low grade coin , of that i'm certain.
<< <i>Duly noted. I suppose it could go VF American, but I doubt VF on the other side of the pond. >>
I'm the first to admit that I'm still learning their grading, so mostly I compare what notable sellers grade their coins and compare with their grading. Here is the one that YorkCoins says is almost VF, although I find that grade to be a bit optimisic, too.
(And I agree that they're being optimistic in calling the latter "almost very fine", by British OR American standards.)
<< <i>Well, then. The coin in the OP is far and away better than the York Coins example you linked to. >>
I personally would have guessed the York linked coin to grade fine at tops.
Added: I'll concede to Antony Wilson's vast knowledge in the field compared to my own miniscule experience.
