Question about erased pencil on a card

Looking at a tough card that has some pen partially erased on the back. How would this be viewed in PSA's world? Would it be "altered" or "MK" in your experience

    I had a 1959 Topps Mantle #10 that had an erase mark on it (someone drew a nice 'stache on the Mick, and someone else wanted it gone)....PSA labeled it altered stock and refused to grade it. I sent the same card off to SGC, and they graded it an SGC 1.5. That is my only incident with the eraser mark.

    I have a vintage card that was marked and quite obviously erased on the reverse. It is in a PSA 6 MK holder. I thought altered was similar to trimmed. Someone tried to get one by the grader, not normal things done to a card in years past.

    It is my understanding that alered stock is NOT similar to trimmed. Altered stock could be erased pen/pencil marks, bleached borders, recoloring the borders? I am not an expert, and apparently they handle each case differently. I can only say what has happened to me personally.....

    An erased pencil mark gets a MK qualifier.

    Mine didn't...mine got altered stock. (MK) is for acutal marks....not marks that used to be there, but is now gone. But like I said, I have seen it both ways...there is no consistency.

    It depends on the severity.

    If no damage is evident it will likely get the MK qualifier.

    if damage occurs (like the Mantle) it is possible it won't get graded and will be kicked back as altered.

    It could also simply get a 1.


    I have seen it these 3 ways.

    I'm OK with a grade of 1 or 2, an MK qualifier, or the card deemed altered. As long as it doesn't get a 7 or 8!
