How much is a '75 Cello Box worth?

There is a nice looking one on ebay that I've got my eye on (and the high bid). BBCE doesn't have one for sale so I was wondering about how much one was worth or how much they've typically gone for. Also, would you A) Get all of the packs graded B) Grade only the star packs (if there are any) C) Keep it as is or D) Bust it ?

    E) buy it and send it to me for Christmas! imageimage

the seller also has a '75 set available, so my logical assumption would be that the cards originated from another cello box, which means you might be pulling a lot of 6's and 7's if you bust it.

edit: set description says from vending, so N/M......go with E. image
  • Hey corvette1340,

You're talking about this one, right?
    75 cello box on ebay

There is also one with all the packs graded...
    all packs graded GAI

You would hope if you buy a full box (raw), it would average out to about $75-$80/pack = $1,800+

    I would...
    A) probably not get all the packs graded, maybe you can see if some are better than others and submit a few to PSA which should validate that they are all authentic
    B) yes, grade all the star packs - probably not too many, if at all
    C) keep them as is; storing them cannot hurt at all
    D) Bust it? I am clearly NOT a buster or cracker of packs, but i would tend to think that wax packs have a better chance of higher graded individual cards than from cello packs.

I hope that helps, 'just my opinion.

It is also my opinion that GLORY DAYS is a great song and it's a fact that I am going to use it in my next video!

Is there price gude for vintage boxes besides searching ebay closed auctions?

I have my eye on a 1972 Topps Football Box that BBCE has on their website, but I have no idea if the price is fair.

Single cello packs go for around $75 a pack these days. If this box is truly an original box, and not one that was pieced together with packs from all over, there should be a premium, too.

Edit: Would not recommend busting 75 cello packs...they are tightly wrapped and thje cards are usually dinged on the corner.

  • I'd be a little concerned about searched packs. Not opened and resealed but searched by sequence. 75 would definitely be a big target year with all the desirable rookies. So even if the seals are good, doesn't mean it's a good box.

There were sequences back then? I thought they were totally random. I know mid 80's Fleer were in a sequence but I did not know older Topps were.

  • FWIW,

Steve lists a buy price of $1600 on his site at BBXE.
I've never sold anything to him and I don't know how often the "buy" prices are updated. I used to use his list as a general guide.

I'd grade a couple of the better packs - either condition wise or star power wise to validate that the packs are legit.
I don't see the point of getting them all graded - the cost seems to add too much to the price

BBCE certainly takes any risk out of the equation, but there are many original packs and boxes out there being held by very reputable collectors and dealers, too. You just have to know what to look for and do your homework..

  • BBCE is the best or one of the best, but they also are not 100% reliable. They make mistakes as well. Always a risk buying any unopened stuff.

BBCE is not the only game in town.
The best material I've opened did not come from BBCE.
