You may be joking but they are making cash.

  • I am, and I know what the truth is. It's fairly simple, adults recollect what they did as children/teens. More of the time, they essentially buy what they could not when they were younger. We grow, we get jobs, get get paid, and we buy. Now with today's economy it's not as widespread as it could be as there is much less "disposable income". My point is, it isn't limited to one collecting "genre". Cards, comics, gaming cards, action figures, webkinz, beanie babies(ok, not really). I've been in the hobby long enough to see a lot of it.

Oh I am no stranger to your theory. I collect wrestling cards in a big way.

In the auction from the link, the seller has 2 feedback and was purchased with one bid by a user with 0 feedback. Obviously the same person. Maybe that was the point of the OP, but if anything it shows that people who buy/sell pokemon can be just as crooked as those who sell sportcards.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • My point is open to interpretation. I just wanted to beat Dpeck to it. I had a friend that wanted to get me into the Magic game back in 1992/1993, whenever they first came out. I was too busy buying up 1993 Ultra and other investment sports cards. My local comic shop had tons of this stuff. I think the best thing I did was pick up multiple copies of Wolverine Number 1.
  • I remember when I worked at a card shop from 98-03 and our hottest sellers were Pokemon. We moved a ton of sports wax, but Pokemon was the top seller. People would ask me about the foil cards we had in our showcase and I had no idea what they were talking about lol. I do remember Charzard (sp?) was a $50 or $60 card at one point.

This is my thinking as well, and if/when it happens I'll be ready in a big way. I have about 250 Base edition holofoils graded PSA 9 or 10, a few thousand sleeved non-foils, several unopened booster boxes, and an entire unopened case of booster boxes. My daughter and I had a GREAT time with them when she was little, so even if they never come back into popularity I'll still have great fondness for them.
    When in doubt, don't.

This PSA-10 Basic Edition Charizard just sold on eBay for $131. A week earlier another one went for $132. There are more Basic Charizards graded PSA-10 (by a wide margin) than any of the other holofoils, but I can still see why they could bring so much. Why they do is a different question. If interest in this series is returning and prices are jumping, it's happening much earlier than I expected. Kids who were involved in the original mania are only in their mid-20s or so; I expected it would be mid-30s until their nostalgia would start to drive this kind of financial interest. Then again, maybe it's just a couple of wild, random sales that signify nothing. But it is interesting.

(corrected to update actual price of first card sold on Dec. 16)

Agreed.... but it doesn't account for all of the bidding. Four different people were in at $100 or more.
