How can I get the info on a few auctions that took place years ago?

  I do have the auction dates and the auction names, but how do I see who owned the coins?

  Assuming you are referring to a UK sale, it depends on whether the details of a previous buyer were recorded in a personal copy of a catalogue. If it was post WW2 up until the 1960s, then a list of buyers was produced by the auction house. In more recent times you will only get the info if the details were noted at the time. You've no chance of getting buyers or sellers from the auctioneers and any phone or postal bid will also remain anonymous in the saleroom. e.g.commission bids at DNW are always knocked down to "Wood". (He buys a lot!!). I might have the relevant info if it was a UK sale, but it would require the lot to be illustrated in an old catalogue as well as having the buyer named.
  
  Is either piece ludicrously rare? If not they are unlikely to have been illustrated in any sale prior to 10-15 years ago as the grades don't appear to be too high. The cost of illustration has dropped to a fraction of its former value with the advent of digital media. Prior to this you would only get important collections or specific high value lots illustrated.
  
  This is where tickets are a bonus, as they frequently yield details of prior ownership.
